It is often said to avoid card board material in SMT area due to dust, i.e. card board boxes etc. are dust generators. Except from house keeping, cosmetic and optical issues, what other concerns are there in SMT/Electronics manufacturing? Solder joint reliability? Are there "dust secured" card board material available?

Yes, electronics manufacturing is a volume producer of cardboard waste.
If the components are ESD-critical, cardboard and most plastics are not ESD safe. Static charges can be generated on these materials during handling by the friction of dissimilar materials sliding across each other.
Most cardboard contains sulfur. Sulfur can cause creep corrosion problems in solder connections. Check the 3/17/2022 Express Newsletter for some papers on creep corrosion.
Cardboard offers food and shelter for roaches.
