PTF, how to feeder teach universal instruments | 25 November, 2022

So I'm attempting to run feeder teach for my platform tray feeder... but I've got no idea what first point I should teach is... normal is the end pin of the feeder but this is for the ptf conveyor... so I've got no idea. If I just teach each corner of the ptf slug it gives me a crazy value. Is there a way to know where the reference fiducial / location is? Has anyone done this? My pick points are currently fine in the ptf but the head is missing the parts on the conveyor. I'm teaching a rear right, between the board handling conveyor on a Genesis machine.

Hi,

The detailed instructions should be in Voyager under PTF Installation. It's basically a kit where you pick up a metal plate and you teach that component on the belt directly. If you don't have access to the kit I'd just start of with the default values though, might even be able to eyeball any adjustments needed. PTF RR BTWN RAIL default is -19.9898mm/85.7250mm Pickup X/Y.

I've got access to the universal manuals / voyager but I haven't found a section that describes the feeder teach setup process, I can pick up the teach slug onto the conveyor and then get into feeder teach but if I teach the corners of the slug as the on screen prompts suggest (bottom left then top right in the feeder location to pick location action) it doesn't give me a valid offset. I have worked out a currently working solution, but I would be keen to know the correct way to do this. I laser cut a copy of the PTF teach slug and tray, then covered the laser cut copy of the teach slug in white board marker. I then ran the teach product in NPI mode with board transport turned off. I measured the offset from the ptf nozzle mark and the high force head nozzle mark, then adjusted the pick position so it picked in the centre.

The specific chapter in voyager is "Perform PTF Setup and Feeder Teach" under the "PTF installation on xxxx" document.

Come to think of it I've had some issues before depending on what nozzle I set to pick with, its also explained in the chapter above in voyager, basically spindle 1 or 4/7 depending on the head/direction.

Copy Paste of the section here since the attachment didn't want to play along:

Perform PTF Setup and Feeder Teach

To teach PTF pick locations to the Platform machine, the PTF must present a component to the Platform machine. Use the following method to cause the PTF to deliver a known component from a known tray to the Platform Machine.

1. Place the PTF Teach Component onto the PTF Teach Tray (found in the PTF Teach Kit), and place into stack #1 (left most stack) of pallet #1 of the PTF.

2. From the Control Panel, select the Machine Setup icon. The Setup Task Invoker dialog box displays.

3. Select PTF Setup Procedure > Invoke. The PTF Setup Procedure dialog box displays.

4. Select Product. The Select Product File dialog box displays.

5. Select the same product used in the Open PTF Teach Product section above.

6. Enter the Slot number for the PTF and select Full Cycle.

7. Verify that the Emergency Stop switch is released and the Interlocks are restored.

8. Select Activate to load the product data to the PTF.

9. Select Activate to initiate the PTF Zero function.

10. Select Activate to start the PTF Pick Cycle. The PTF will stop with the component on the belt in the location closest to the upward-looking camera.

11. Select Cancel. Wait until Product reset and Machine Changed to Setup Mode are displayed in the control panel message window.

12. Perform Feeder Teach. Refer to the Feeder Teach Voyager help topic.

13. Perform the PTF Teach component removal procedure. a. Push the Emergency Stop switch. b. Open the Platform machine cover, and remove the component from the PTF belt shuttle. c. Close the Platform machine cover, and release the Emergency Stop switch.

14. If 2 PTFs are mounted, repeat the Feeder Teach procedure for the second PTF.

15. When complete, remove the PTF Teach Tray from stack 1 of pallet 1 and store in the PTF Teach Kit.

That procedure all works perfectly, and I'm read through that section of the manual however...

12. Perform Feeder Teach. Refer to the Feeder Teach Voyager help topic.

I can't find anything in Voyager that explains the feeder teach procedure for the PTF. I can get all the other bits of this to work fine, but then I'm not sure what action to choose and which points to go to / from. Do I choose from a fiducial to pick point? if so where is the fids?

You teach the corners of the component picked from the previous steps. Just select "PTF RR BTWN RAIL" slot 75 in "feeder teach" and it should move over to the belt.

Thanks Peter, when I open feeder teach i'm presented with a bunch of actions. I can't find docs on what the different actions are. Do you know which one I should do? I have attempted to teach the corners but the value it gives put the PTF pick point outside the machine... so I suspect I'm using the wrong action or something else is very problematic... the number it gives me is totally different that with my whiteboard marker method.

Just so we're on the same page, it's the little "Hammer" icon, Machine setup -> Feeder Teach. Then it's the "Slot X,Y feeder teach" in the pulldown menu. That should be the default one, set feeder slot and the PTF as your feeder. If in doubt you can always make a back up in the feeder database as well. Probably a good idea either way. Then with the component on the belt, just hit activate and teach the corners.

Cool, I do exactly that, I teach the bottom left and top right corner as it says... though maybe I should try the other ways. It gives me a totally wrong value.

I use a DTF instead of PTF, but one thing I wondered reading this...Which pocket do you designate as "First Pocket" for your tray in your Feeder.db? Could this be affecting the XY position being returned by the machine? For DTF I use upper left. Should the PTF be upper right?

That's really up to you and for DTF what bank you're using it in so you can reach the pockets for teaching. Obviously easiest to keep them all the same.
