While IPC-A-610 [ https://www.ipc.org/TOC/IPC-A-610G.pdf ] is a good starting point for establishing your inspection requirements, there is no requirement for using a specific tool to make a measurement. You need to choose the microscope, AOI, loop, etc to make sure you're meeting the requirements of the job.

Apologies, I misunderstood the question. We utilize everything from an eye loop to 3D AOI. It's more about the standard you are trying to maintain, and what device is needed to check for it.

It depends on what you will be building and your customer`s requirements.

You many need an X-ray machine. You will almost certainly want magnifier lenses with ring lights. And you will probably never have enough binocular microscopes. You will also want to get some Vernier Calipers.

If we gave you a list, I would bet you would get a customer with an unusual requirement that needs something not on the list.

If you run a TH parts, X-ray is needed in 95% of the cases. AOI will be your SMT criteria except bottom terminated components(need X-ray). After equipment, you should still have 4X 6X 10X 20X optical checks based on part size. Building PCBAs without these machines/stations means you are closing your eyes for a lot of potential problems that exist. Board being functional today, doesn't hold information about reliability.
