New production using only MPN (manufacturer part number) for programming pp machine | 4 February, 2021

Hi. We are starting production with brand new systems and we wont /cant be using our own Internal Part number (IPN) components for this production. I was thinking if we should only use Manufacturer part number (MPN) for programming. Does anyone have experience for using only MPN for programming? is there something what needs to take into account ?

In a past life I worked at a CM that used MFG P/Ns and the only thing I had to watch out for was character limits in the P/N field for the machines as well as special characters the machine couldn't handle.

Thanks. System we are going to use have 35 character limit and usually MFG P/Ns are less than 35 character (i havenĀ“t founded yet MFG P/Ns that are longer). and there can be special characters.

I used to program even without MPN. Just package and value. This way you can control allowed manufacturers through purchasing and production can use any available to use parts.

I would not go there. If you are forced to buy part from different manufacturer because of supply shortage then you will need to make change to machine program and that means a lot of downtime unless you can do that with 2-3 clicks. My company uses IPN for same spec components regardless of manufactureer of component and I use values and size for programing machines. Also MPN is long and hard to read, this will open a window for errors during programing and will consume more time in general... setting up machines, loading feeders, reloading feeders,...
