Stereo binocular Scope vs LCD Camera

Stereo binocular Scope vs LCD Camera Scope | 21 February, 2020

I'm looking to gather some opinions. The C.M. I work for has always used the 3D Stereo Binocular Microscopes. There is a big push towards LCD Camera scopes, that is meeting a lot of resistance from the Solderers and QA. What is the consensus out there? Can the Camera Scopes be just as good, or are we hindering ourselves in the pursuit of modernization?

I have not used many camera/display scopes (have seen a few demos) but I've never seen one that gave me the same quality image as a binocular scope. I even take pics with my phone through the lens and they don't come out half bad, even after cropping.

Hey just solders and QA people don't like it. As long as management likes it, who are these to argue? Fire them all and hire people that like cameras better.

Now seriously - people who work with it should have the final word. You can also have both if you see some value in the cameras yourself. The easiest test is you and the person that pushes most for the cameras implementation to work operators for two days. One day on the old scope and one day on the new technology. Then your opinion will have more value.

People in general are fairly resistant to change ( I've found ) - however, we're looking at the same move to LCD cameras shortly.

My main apprehension is the lack of stereo vision ( and associated depth perception ) when reworking under it but I'm sure it's something the users will easily adapt to ( eventually )

Do not get anything without trying a demo unit for at least a week. And have fine pitch samples ready to inspect.

I use a stereo microscope (Mantis) and find it way better for soldering/rework than a camera system, which we also have here. The camera system does NOT give you the same 3D-type of image that the Mantis does, BUT, there are times when you are inspecting joints - eg on a QFP or even a BGA - that the camera system wins out. Our QA guys use the camera systemm, but I do the soldering, and prefer the Mantis.

As for resistance to change, we have a lot who still believe in the old adage of "but, we've always done it this way" ....
