Hello, I am a Japanese engineer. I am sorry for my unskillful English.

Have you ever encountered cracks in chip resistors or IC components due to board mechanical stress? Especially, I'm looking for a case in the PCBs Depaneling process(pizza cutter).

I have seen examples of MLCC cracks , but I want to know if other component may occur.

I have seen resistors cracked during placement. The part was programmed incorrectly and the nozzle pushed down on the part too hard.

I do not remember seeing any cracked during depanelization.

Nibblers can cause damage if they are on the bottom and too close to the mouse bites.

I've seen crack on resistor also.The crack on ICs mainly is on the solder joint due to very high strain.

Review:

* Too much placement force

* Underside supports are set incorrectly

* Component height set incorrectly

* Downstroke location of either the pick or placement set incorrectly

* Nozzle that is smaller than recommended for the part

* Parts are already cracked

The chip resistors are placed on the edge of the board, but the board has no or enough waste tabs. When de-panelizing, the bits may contact and break them. You can use a smt carrier, or add waste tabs in your next assembly manufacturing.
