Philips Topaz - is there any way to use it to place parts 11 - 13mm tall? | 27 June, 2019

We have two Topaz machines,and use them regularly. However, we have a board that contains a standoff and a large electrolytic cap, and one is 11.2 mm high, the other 13mm. Is it at all possible to modify or upgrade the Topaz to handle these parts?

Hi Janet,

You could pick up an Emerald very cheaply these days, which is very similar except has 2 heads and can go to 15-17mm high. May be cheaper than trying to modify a topaz & vision system. Same software, feeders etc.

There may be other ways around it - there is some excellent 3rd party support for the old GEM series especially in Europe and the UK, but I'm guessing you are in the USA?

It's been awhile but yes, if you do not allow the machine to optimize your program and your placing sequence is such that the tallest component is perhaps the 1st or last placement so it doesn't bump into other components, next is you may look into a custom nozzle for the tall part and then work around some vision processing issue's since you may end up with a camera focusing issue on the tall part. Your camera type is another consideration, the machine configuration I had were front and rear camera's. So we had to use the correct camera and same feeder location to be consistent. We were able to repeatedly place 12mm tall electrolytic caps.
