There was a British reality show where they dropped scientists different places and gave them challenges. One place was in New Zealand near an old gold mine. One task was to purify gold with the materials they had on hand. Take a wild guess what they used to accomplish this. (and it worked)

One field service guy told me that a customers techs laughed at him when he told them to use peanut oil on their VCD tooling. And then thanked him the next time he visited.

To your point, I'd watch that show. It would certainly beat most of what's available these days.
