We currently use Assembleon Gem series pick and place machines. We have no problems using them other than they are not intended to run 0201 or 01005 components. We are looking to buy another machine to add to our lines that would be capable of doing so. I just have no idea where to start as far as brand. I'm looking for a low budget, new, and low maintenance automated machine. Any suggestions?

Try Manncorp and APS. I'm not sure that either one will meet your 01005 requirement.

Jonnie,

I think the entry level machines from all the major manufacturers are capable of 0201 and 01005 placements when properly configured. Keep in mind that as you go to smaller parts the process window gets tighter. Printing is a major concern with older equipment. When you select your equipment ask about special nozzles, cameras and feeders. This will usually be required for the 01005(0402 metric)parts. the 0201's will likely not be an issue at all

Well the Assembleon AX201 could be a good choice in your case.

Good hunting for new system /poul

Low-Medium volume and Low Budget are difficult for others to quantify. I'm not familiar with GEM's but if the AX-201 suggested above can use your existing feeders its obviously got a leg up on the competition. Otherwise, to some extent your choice might be influenced by what other parts you might be placing. Some machines will need special 2mm index feeders some might have improved feeders for 0201 or 01005 but are fine with standard ones for 0402. If I were to interpret Low-Medium Volume as being say 6-12k CPH in the real world I would be tempted to suggest a Europlacer IINEO if you want flexibilty and intelligent feeders. If those things don't concern you, similar budgets will get you an Ipulse M20 (or whatever similar Japanese machine they sell/brand in your region)or perhaps a Juki KE-1080. For slightly less money you could look at an Essemtec Paraquda, although in that instance I believe the better feeders you should probably ask for may mean other higher end machines start to clobber it. Below that are Machines like Autotronik/Manncorp they are about 60% of the cost and that shows in technology, finish and software.

Europlacer iineo well worth a look.. total flexibility and capabilities... I would recommend that anything you get should have the force feedback in the placement head...critical going forward

What vintage are the gem series you are running? We have some '06 Opal Xii's and place 0201's with them. Haven't tried 01005's. I know you said new but Cardinal Circuit has an auction gonig right now that has a 2010 Assembleon MG1 and a 2006 MG2 and a 2004 Topaz X II. Not sure on the Topaz but the MG series should do 01005's. I think the MG's should be able to use the CL feeders from the GEMs.
