OK, I have a new product being tossed over "the wall" that has a flex circuit layered into a standard FR board and protrudes out of it. The flex circuit is 0.022" thick and is the 3rd layer of 6 layers. The total board thickness of the FR board is 0.082" thick. I have to populate both the FR board and flex circuit all at the same time. Not too bad, but there is a 0.030" drop in height between the FR board and flex circuit. I'm pretty sure I can over come the Z height and populate this thing, but how do I keep it held down? Sure big ol' clamps in a pallet are fine for placement, but what about that little screen printing process before the placement? Do I need to even clamp a flex circuit down for screen printing? Anyone doing this? Any help is greatly appreciated.

The standard "read the archives, slap nutz" is not the answer sought.

Do you have vacuum on your printer? I guess not or you wouldnt be asking. Can you get vacuum? If not you could use double sided tape, I am always amazed how many times it can stick before it needs replaced.

Why yes, I do have vacuum on my printer (God bless MPM!). I see what you're saying - use a pallet and have vacuum holes to hold the flex circuiut! Wow, it just got a little brighter in my cube! Oh, the light bulb above my head just went on. Thanks for the idea Traviss!

Thanks for being my guinea pig, hussman. I'm the director of publications for the SMTA, and we're testing the distributed forums content technology developed by SMTnet. I'm sorry I have no answer for your technical question, but I'm curious, what do you mean by "slap nutz".

Slappy,

Most of our discussions about flex came before the last great SMTnet.com server transition that destroyed the archives.

Consider custom building carriers with tooling holes, vacuum line holes, alignment pins, multiple layers, etc. from unclad laminate purchased from your local PCB fab. The double-side that Travis mentions works great.

Why, it's how one dummy calls another dummy stupid.
