Just want to ask.

What is the effect of dull gold surface on solderability?

When I made a test run with several pieces containing dull gold defect on the pad(of varying levels), I found that components can still stick to the pad with good amount of solder coating it. However, I'm not sure if it would have any long-term effects on the joint. Hope any of you can provide some insight.

Looking at the appearance of pads and solder joint is pretty subjective. Especially lead free people are all over the map on the physical appearance of pads and joints. The true test is solderabilty testing, weather it’s just looking for good wetting or cross sectioning it and measuring the intermetallics. Most process engineers do have a good feel of what pads should look like. I find it does not hurt to send out boards once a year for testing. It gives me a piece of mind that our process is up to standards.

Testing, huh...

Appreciate the feedback. Thanks!

It will not easy to measure solderability on PCB pad. Any metal tends to oxidize with time and temperature. Make sure your storage of the PCB is accordance to supplier recommended specification.
