Flux Removal from IC for Re-work | 7 December, 2009

Hi All,

I am trying to figure out the best way to rework around 2.7K worth of 48pin QFP ICs. I am trying to salvage these ICs from defective PCBA and they have quite a bit of rosin flux on them.

Does anyone know how to get the flux off while minimizing the risk of damaging the pins?

Does anyone know if immersing the IC in pure alcohol is an option?

Thanks guys.

Alcohol won't do much for the rosin residue, you'll have to scrub which isn't good on your QFP. Can you clean the assemblies before removal? A solvent such as Ensolve or Axarel would be effective on rosin.

Contact Ravi and Naveen at Zestron and tell them I sent you. They will hook you up...

Not sure if Multicore/Henkel still offers it, Prozone is an outstanding chemistry for RMA removal. Heated to a relatively low temp. No Ultrasonics necessary. Could use a Pyrex Beaker Hot and Hot Plate to test.
