OS/2 Warp GSM not playing nice with the network | 18 May, 2009

Hello,

Has anyone had luck with getting a GSM 1 machine talking on a windows network? We are looking to do backups every so often. We purchased a 10base-2 to 10base-T converter and it talks to the rj-45 Windows end, but there is no communication on the GSM end.

Kind of off topic for an SMT forum, but I've gotten lots of help here!

Thanks,

Alex

I have sucessfully networked our GSM1 into WinXp network using NetBIOS. I was able to access shared folder on the XP server from GSM and we are using that connection for backups and new product imports. Our machine runs on OS/2 V2.11, but I think that does not matter in this case.

If that's what you want I can send you detailed description how I did it...

Yes! That's exactly what we need. If there's no difference between v2.xx and v4, I'd much appreciate some help!

OK - first, look at this page:

http://www.jacco2.dds.nl/samba/lanman.html

There's a pretty detailed description how to install LanMan client on the OS/2 machine. Some links are broken, but you can find alternate sources on the net.

A good site with OS/2 drivers is here:

http://www.os2bbs.com/download/ndrivers.html

NetBEUI protocol is NOT installed by default in the WinXP installation proces. Instead, look here for explanation how to install it:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/301041

After that, it should be pretty trivial. You will be able to access XP folder(s) from GSM but not vice versa (all transfers will be initiated from GSM) but that should not be a problem.

Please note that I did not use "NetBIOS over TCP/IP" but used native NetBios protocol. It is simpler to implement, but no routing is possible...

By the way, what is the configuration of your machine (USOS version etc.)?
