Anyone use AOI instead of final inspection for analysing joint quality? If so any good?

We use a Marantz ISpector and as long as you program it correctly, taking into consideration any shadowing from adjacent parts, it does a superb job catching non-solders, head in pillow and insufficients.

We use Mirtec MV-7s for post SMT inspection of solder joints as well. The artistry is in the program debug. We are very pleased with the solder inspections provided by these machines, and technology having advanced bit, most every AOI machine has tremendously improved in user friendliness and defect detection. Look for 5 cameras to allow side view inspections, and tiered lighting to provide good detail of the solder joints.

Depending on your application, one or more machines might be better suited to what you are trying to achieve. High volume, low mix? (extremely detailed, programming speed not an issue) Low Volume high mix? (less detail, but quick programming time.)

Several good choices out there. I am most familiar with Mirtec, Yestech and Omron (in that order)but receive no perks or compensation from any of thoe manufacturers or representatives.

We use a YesTech M1 system. I have been pleased with it's performance and feel it has done fairly well being that it only has one vertical camera. There are different algorithms you can use to compensate for the lack of angled cameras to catch some of the solder defects. But I concur with Hegemon, go with a system with 5 cameras (one vertical and four side). This will take a lot of the guess work out of creating useful algorithms and will help eliminate those pesky lifted lead issues that are much harder to detect with a single camera system. Unfortunately, I was involved with the decision on which vendor to go with, but not which system. I would have preferred one with angled cameras.

We use the Mirtec system and are very pleased with it's consistency and reliability. We also are satisfied with its ease of programming and ease of use for the operators. I do agree that the 5 camera system would be best, as well as the optional laser for coplanarity testing.
