Anyone ever seen an X1 encoder alarm on an IP3? We get it soon after power up and the x1 axis never locks. We have a motor/encoder on order but I've never seen this error message and am not positive that will fix it.

I've never seen that message myself... an idea though.. if your IP3 has a 4400 vision card you'll have seperate LSO cards. The encoders plug directly into them. It could be related to the LSO cards. You could try swapping the LSO cards and see if the problem follows the card. I can't remember if there are jumpers on these cards that identify their position...but you might want to check. If you've got a 4800 vision card, I believe that the encoders plug into it. In which case, it could be a bad vision card. Something to try while you wait for the encoder to arrive...

Thanks for the reply. The IP3 we're working on is a 4400. We installed a new motor/encoder today but it didn't help. So far we've swapped the CPU, vision card, both LSOs and the servo cards. We've been poking around the relays and wiring tonight but can't find anything wrong. I guess we'll keep trying. If anyone remembers seeing the "Encoder Alarm" on their IP3 we would be grateful for any input.

hello Keith,

the problem may be related to a faulty / dirty linear scale.

kindly check on the yellow strip along the X axis. clean & clear the glass linear scale of debris & grease.

The X1 glass scale reader is bad. After cleaning it didn't help, we removed the read head and took the cover off. There is a cracked component (L1) and magic smoke/dust on the parts around L1. There's also a dead short on the two tiny wires that supply power to the outside half of the read head. That short disappears if we unplug the ribbon cable from the fried circuit board. My coworker will call Fuji in the morning to find out the damage but it looks like from the parts list we have to buy the scale with both readers. Thanks for your help!

If you are certain that the Linear scale and reader is damaged, check out equipmatching.com there is one for sale on that.
