I was wondering if there is anyone out there who is soldering the Luxeon Lumiled LEDs into product. We are working on a product that uses them. They are a challenge in that the are SMT parts, but will not withstand reflow temperatures. The manufacturer recommends hotbar soldering with a thermal cycle not to exceed 330C tip temperature, and not to stay on the lead/joint for more than 1.5 seconds.

I was wondering how others are soldering these. What type of equipment/process parameters are you using.

Thanks

hot bar is slow. what are your numbers requirements?

You could shoot the engineer that designed them in without having a way to manufacture them. You could also try laser soldering or selective soldering.

Let me know how you make out with these. We are looking in to building some boards with them as well.

Don't touch the dome with the nozzle when you pick the part!

We "bar" solder them too. (It's really pulsed resistance welding). It's slow but reliable. They seem to be designed for this process. By the way, Luxeon just came out with new LEDs that have nearly the same luminous flux, but that can withstand leadfree reflow conditions and use an FR4 substrate.
