Hi guys. I'm hoping maybe some of you can help me with some information today. I'm looking to find out "ballpark" how much a decent board washer would set me back. The one I currently have just isn't doing the job the way I want it. It seems to have a real tough time with some of the extremely low profile components. So, I'd just like opinions on brands and options, and how much (again, roughly) it'll cost me. Thanks very much.

Not really. A new Electrovert AquaStorm 100, in-line machine, is under $60K, for straight aqueous applications. The batch type from Aqueous Tech are like $35K I believe. $120K would be for a high performance in-line machine, such as the AquaStorm 200, that's going to run chemistry, like Zestron or Kyzen, with chemical isolation and other options to clean non water soluable flux residues, such as no-cleans and RMAs.

Well, 60K sounds a little more like it. Yes, it was the 200 I had been sent literature on, but I did kind of figure that the salesman would throw the highest priced equipment at me first, like it was still 1998 and money didn't really mean much. I'll clue him in on the present date when they come in this week. Thanks Pete!

What low profile components are you dealing with? We have had problems with cleaning under leadless chip carriers using an aquastorm 200 with Kyzen Aquanox 4520T and the general concensus is that you will not clean under this type of device with an aqueous wash. This left us with solvent (our existing process for LCC's using Triklone N) or different flux chemistry so that it doesn't matter if they're clean. It's something to do with the surface tension of water and the stand off height of the component....

If money is an issue there are alot of these machines out there on the 2nd hand market for less than you think.

Can be done with AquaStorm 200, with some mods. I worked on a project a few years ago for a military company that needed to clean no-clean solderpaste residues from under LCC devices, we're talking like 2mil standoff. We ended up using a Zestron cleaning material, adding 4 additional Vee Jet spray bars in the wash stage, Hurricane Jets in wash and rinse. Conveyor speed was like 1.5 FPM. It does a beautiful job of getting under those devices. Contact Dirk Ellis, applications engineer at the Electrovert factory- 573-317-3050.

Thanks for all the info guys. The biggest issue I have on cleaning is under QFNs and the like. But even an 0805 or 0603 will give us trouble now and again. Like I said, our current system isn't making me happy. It's looking like Electrovert is the winner here. Thanks again.
