Is the same marking protocol used when identifying 0603, 0402, etc.. components? For instance, would a 27.4K ohm 1% resistor still have four (4) characters to identify if the body color is black? Any feedback is appreciated. Thanks.

Most 0603 parts have three digits (Ex: 10K would be 103). Many parts will have no markings. All the 0603 parts we use are 1%.

Typical idents are as follows, but not limited to:-

5% 3 digits, first two are significant figures, third is number of zeros and letter "R" is decimal point.

1% 4 digits, first three are significant figures fourth digit is number of zeros and letter "R" is decimal point.

Just to confuse, some 0603 resistors are now coming with the EIA-96 marking code. The table is too long to replicate here, but a 12K4 resistor has a code of "10C" (!!??).

0402 resistors can be supplied with no marking at all.

I believe that different manufacturers possible use different codes.

You can imagine the confusion (panic) that arose when we started using our first batch of EIA-96 bits.
