Hello experts,

Here is my problem: I have a board that has smt parts on one side and TH parts on the other. We designed special pallet for wave, but the pallet itself is 15mm thick, so we are still seeing some defects. Have any of you tried to find a selective soldering solution? I was thinking of a whole fixture(nozzle) that matches the board pattern, so when it goes up, it will solder everything in one shot.

Evtimov,

The solution you have described is called multiwave. Consider manufacturing fixture of low thermal mass composite materials. This might help.

This has already been done. Companies like Seho Selective Solder machines can provide this service. I imagine it is not cheap. I'd be curious to compare the drop rate of parts per person per hour on a couple of Pillarhouse Jades vs on custom machine.

Pavel,

that sounds interesting. Do you know anybody working with this kind of material? I don't even know what the material will be called.

Ectimov,

Have you looked into table-top robotic soldering solutions?

A fraction of the price and offer more long term flexibility.

Might I suggest you take a look at: http://www.promationusa.com

Hi Evtimov,

I've seen lower cost versions around depending on your volume - Inertec Cube being the one most recently "introduced" to us. The Sales Engineer described a custom fixture for us called a stamp that would hit every joint at once.

Nothing exists in a vacuum so I'm sure others will.

I've always heard this referred to as "stamp soldering". Not sure on pricing, although I can't imagine it's all that cheap.

Hi Phil, we were given a ball park of approx $125K for a non inline version for one of our applications. Can't find the inline quote.

Evtimov,

Check them: http://www.mb-mfg.com/products/surface-mount-carriers

Only for instance. All can remember material I was using was black and made of pressed fibers. It was hardly treatable as well.

Durastone pallets, we use lots of precision ones for selective wave soldering. An utter nightmare to machine - hideously fibrous. We use http://www.globaldatum.com/ for ours.
