Universal 6346A Radial Lead Sequence Bad I/O Card? | 10 April, 2017

The unit stopped sending air to the inserter suddenly. When I send the Status signal to the unit from the PC it returns waiting for NO Pushbutton/Limit. I can not find any issue with the limits or Em Stop buttons. Is there a chance that we lost an IO card? Is there any way to tell if a card is bad?

Thanks in Advance, Mark

Hi Mark,

The status messages for these older UIC machines aren't always as helpful as we would like them to be. What exactly is happening? No air for the whole inserter part of the machine, or the inserter head only?

It's been a while since I have worked on these and I do not have any documentation but if the whole inserter does not have air then the dump valve is were you should look. See if the solenoid is getting power. These valves fail at times and could be the cause.

Hey Jerry,

The valve that sends air to the head of the inserter does not close when you press the "Interlock" button. If you press on the end of the solenoid with a screewdriver to force it the air makes it to the head. If doesn't seem like it is trying to open the solenoid but I will put a volt meter on it and see if the machine is sending power to the silonoid. My other thought is that the machine is not seeing a input that in needs for permission to send air to the inserter. Is ther a way to check IO cards?

Thanks for the help, Mark

Mark,

There is a way to read the I/O but without the electrical diagrams I cannot help you with that. When you press the interlock button does it go out?

I am working on getting diagrams. The light stays on.

Thanks, Mark

That means you are not clearing the interlock condition. Probably a switch has been bumped out of place or sometimes a wire for a switch gets broken.

Do you have an interlock bypass key? If you do can you reset the interlock in bypass? If you cannot, I believe there is a pico fuse on the interlock pcb in the control panel that may have blown.

Yes Sir, someone had replaced the fuse with a resistor and it had burned up. We had an exact board on the VCD. We swapped them and it worked!

I am not sure how this forum works but now the machine will zero and say it's missing a part but the sequencer doesn't move. I have been looking high and low to find some documentation on programming the unit. It looks like there may be two files. One for the inserter and one for the sequencer. Maybe a .put and a .Mag. Do you know anywhere that shows the structure of these files? I believe that they are CSV and start X,Y,Z1,Z2,Part Location.... but not much more than that. I am not even sure I need two files. I can load programs and run them but I am missing something.

Thanks You so much for your help! Mark

The board may look the same, but there could be some differences not readily visible. Fix the other board and put it back in. Then rerun your process.

If you still need help you should contact Don Burshnick at Alpha 1 Technologies. That guy is the VCD/Sequencer/Radial Inserter whisperer. If he can't help you, you cannot be helped.
