AOI Machine Daily Verification | 25 November, 2015

Hi I need to find a method to daily verify the AOI machine before starting the manufacturing process. Does anybody have any experience?

Thanks in advance, Milroy

why you need to verify every day? We do it only if machine start missing a lot, and using board with banch of misalignment's, tombstones and other problems.

What exactly are you looking to verify? Following the manufactures recommended schedule for calibration should be enough.

Another option is many AOIs have an option to run a bare board, when doing this it will invert what it's looking for, so every ROI in the program should fail, this could be an option to make sure that your pass/fail scores and criteria are where they should be.

We do what here is call a master, this board has a bunch of misalign components, missing components, bad solder joints, crack components, and other defects that we want the AOI to look for, now we compare what the AOI finds with a list of the defects in the board that's how we do it here and at several other companies where I have work with.

cheers!

You can do the so called "Golden Sample" with defects from the process. The making of the defects on the board is very important to be as much close to the real ones from the production. How I do it - after the printer I remove paste on some pads, so I can simulate missing solder (blocked stencil). After the pick and place - I shift some components (skew them a lot, because they tend to go back and become OK) - do some polarity errors (on the LED's, IC's, el. capacitors etc) - remove some components - lift some pins if I have SOP's or QFP's to look for lifted lead - record all the defects and then I put it in the oven The result is a very good test board with defects. Then you can make a simple check-list for the operators and run the panel until it changes its colors or starts showing more false alarms (it is good at least 1 year with no problems). Its up to the company's rules if you test it every time before start, one time when you make the program or other. By the way, with the same panel you can make a R&R attribute validation(only pass and fail) to see if your AOI is capable. If you have some more question you can ask me on my email, I will be glad to help you.
