Nordson Dage XD7600NT vs Nikon XTV160 | 2 April, 2014

Hi All,

I am looking at new X-ray systems and have shortlisted the Nordson Dage XD7600NT (Ruby) and the Nikon XTV160 (Revolution). I would greatly appreciate it if somebody can highlight the pros and cons of each?

My concerns are software usability (easy programming and runs), maintenance and low cost of ownership.

Thanks in advance!

Hello,

as we are talking about X-ray, I don't think you can do maintenance on your own unless you are specially trained in X-ray applications. Dage(we have Dage) offers maintenance as well as tube warranty but it not cheap. In terms of programming you should ask them in details what they consider automatic inspection as it might be different from what you consider automatic inspection. For me the one we have Nordson Dage XD7600NT is not an automated machine. It is more as a manual machine. You can set a program for single sided board for a BGA or looking for some voiding, but I will still consider the machine to be more for manual use. Other than that machine has very good capabilities seeing defects, but you are the one that should navigate it to find them(opens, head in pillow etc.)

We have had a Dage XD7600NT Ruby for about two years. We were one of the first in North America to purchase it with the X-Plane Technology. We concur with the previous post that it is primarily a manual system. Dage offers step-and-repeat features in the software but we hardly ever us it. We use it extensively for failure analysis of single boards or small lots of boards. We rely on Dage for maintenance and calibration.

You are correct. Both the machines are "semi-automatic". The program can focus on the part you want to inspect and perform basic inspections like void analysis (BGA, QFP) etc. But you have to manually navigate and look for defects like TH solder fill (using a software tool), head-in-pillow, etc. The XD7600NT has a sealed tube vs an open tube in the XTV160. Yes, it is going to be expensive to replace the sealed tube once it goes bad. With the open tube, you just have to replace the filament which is cheap.

Can you tell me what are your thoughts on the ease of programming on the XD7600NT?

Thanks, Sid U.

We use it almost exclusively in manual mode for PCBA failure analysis. Our main purpose is to find head-in-pillow defects; secondarily incomplete wetting of ball to substrate. In two years of almost continuous use we have only had occasion to use the semiautomatic programming features two or three times. Frankly it is just as fast to drive to the site to be inspected and go from there. It is also very easy to teach new operators the manual aspects of the system; beginners can be inspecting parts in a matter of a few minutes after basic instruction.

3D and X-Plane are more complicated, time-consuming, and demand more advanced instruction. Since we charge by the hour for failure analysis services, we have to educate our customers that if it becomes necessary to switch to 3D/CT mode, this will be more time consuming and consequently more expensive. We don't want them to get sticker shock.

in our opinion unless the Nikon machine has a solution to the Xplane ability to use Tomosynthesis there is a huge difference in the 2 machines. Xplane is a huge quality enabler and we have people beating our door down to get us to look at their perceived issues only to find that it is actually something they didnt expect that is clearly shown with x-plane.

just our 2 cents....

We've experienced the same thing: Customers bring a board to us suspecting a certain problem, only to find, after Xplane analysis by us, that the defect is different or lies elsewhere.
