Hi,

Do you have any idea if there is some tool to inspecet if we have the right component on the board ? like a smart tweezer. Also I'm looking to find a tool to spice smt reel. I need that because our buyer told us they will only buy cut tape. Which is not good really good in our line. Or do you have any other idea.

Thank you

We have fought with cut-tape way too much. It's always a bad idea. We've tried a couple methods/devices for manual splice with limited success. Before you look into this I would ask them if they could supply you cut tape qty's inslusive of fairly generous scrap (low $ parts at least). Another problem I will warn you about is the fact that you might get parts from your customer that they bought from places that sell only in 50,100,150, etc. qtys. This does not always mean you will get a strip of 300. It might mean you will get 6 strips of 50 or some other combination. If you do, I hope your operators are good at hand placing SMT parts. The most useful tool in cut-tape hell is cover tape extenders. These allow you to at least be able to load a feeder with minimal wasted parts.

We get our splice tape through splicetronic solutions, I recomend the double splice tape. steir also makes the double splice tape it works good for attaching strips together and also for putting leaders on the tape, if your feeders require. GOOD LUCK!

We have the same problems with cut/tape parts. But, we specialize in short-run prototypes, so I don't have much of a choice but to deal with it, and find a way to make it as easy as possible.

We just demo'd a splice tool from Sierra Electronics (www.tapesplice.com).

My concerns were centered on two items, 1. ease of use, and 2. effectiveness of splice through the magazines.

Through some pretty rigorous testing, the reports from my production floor have been positive on both counts. Using the splices/tool is easy, and the splices are moving through my magazines easily. I suspect that the quality of splice that I'm getting is related to the fact that my machine operator is the one doing the splicing, and the one that has to fix the problem if it doesn't work!

We've also instituted a policy internally when we buy parts: Always ask for continuous strips! DigiKey is always the worst offender for sending multiple cut strips to fill my short quantity order. When placing the order, we simply put a note on the order via the website asking them to only send continuous strips. And, so far, there have been no issues. Instead of getting 50 two-piece strips of cut tape, I get one continuous 100 piece strip. Still no leader, but, I can splice on my own leader! Continuous strips do not cost any more than cut/tape, and are generally available for the quantities you'll need.

Go inform the owner of your company that you are spending hours of labor dealing with these parts instead of spending the extra 4 dollars it takes to buy an entire reel.

When we deal with strips we make sure that an extra amount is ordered to apply additional leader tape. If we run short we make our buyer buy more! they are getting the picture. We now get 50 extra parts on 4mm pitch tape. Cost is about an additional $.25 per P/N on the average for the Cs and Rs

I'd be happy to tell my customers that they need to provide more parts...the problem is, we specialize in short runs. So, if the customer pinches pennies, and only buys 50 pieces for 50 piece demand, I need to be able to deal with it.

Hence, the successful implementation of the splicing equipment. And some additional up-charging to my customers.

It's good to be in the service industry.

Hi,

You could try other types without brass shim. It's also important to use a good tool that is adjusted properly.

Hi,

I think our Splice Device is the tool yiu are looking for. It can be used in high volume production for splicing in the production line OR used to splice short lenghts of carriers to a complete reel. http://www.dekitools.com/group.asp?group=664⊂=600
