ANGLETON, TX, MAY 20, 2003� Benchmark Electronics, Inc., (NYSE: BHE) today

announced that John Cox has been elected to the board of directors at the annual

shareholders� meeting held on May 13, 2003.

Mr. Cox has been Chief Financial Officer of BMC Software, Inc. since January 2002 and

Vice President, Chief Accounting Officer from December 1999. Mr. Cox qualifies as an

�independent director� under the current and proposed rules of the New York Stock

Exchange and as an �audit committee financial expert� under the new rules of the

Securities and Exchange Commission.
