IPC Symposium Tackles Cost, Quality and Productivity Issues in Electronics Manufacturing Industry experts show how to put lean theory into practice

 Implementing lean concepts in electronics manufacturing is the focus of IPC Symposium on Lean for the Assembly Industry: Putting Theory Into Practice,” December 4–5, 2012, Costa Mesa, Calif. Presented by IPC — Association Connecting Electronics Industries®, the event brings participants face-to-face with electronics industry experts who have successfully executed lean practices within their own organizations. The two-day event will include a technical conference, workshops, a tabletop exhibition and networking opportunities.

Understanding the use of lean in an electronics manufacturing environment requires insight into our industry,” says Susan Filz, IPC director of industry programs. “We’ve brought together lean experts from major electronics manufacturing companies to present at this event because they understand the unique challenges — and opportunities — our industry faces.”

Workshops will be held on December 4. Ron Lasky, Ph.D., senior technologist at Indium Corporation will cover the fundamentals of productivity and profitability, including line uptime and line balancing. In another workshop, Jes Vargas, principal at DPMG Corp, will address lean principles and waste elimination.

The technical conference on December 5 will cover a broad range of topics, including how to apply lean principles, eliminate waste, increase assembly productivity and profitability, choose and use lean tools, apply lean Six Sigma in EMS environments, lead employee-driven kaizen using 5S and promote a lean culture. Experts from Axiom Electronics, Lean Six Sigma Tool Box, KEY Electronics, Viasystems Group Inc., DPMG Corp, Elcoteq Electronics (India) Pvt Ltd. and IEC Electronics Corp. are slated to present.

A networking breakfast and lunch as well as a scheduled open-discussion forum are part of the event to provide attendees with opportunities to discuss their own experiences with and insights into lean. The event also includes a tabletop exhibition of suppliers that offer lean services.
