CyberOptics Celebrates 30 Years of Revolutionary Inspection and Sensing Solutions

Jan 07, 2014

CyberOptics Corporation (Nasdaq: CYBE), a global leader in intelligent inspection and sensing solutions for the electronics assembly and semiconductor markets, is delighted to announce that 2014 marks the company’s 30th anniversary.

The company was founded in 1984 by Late Dr. Steve Case with its first office located at 2331 University Ave. and many of its first employees being graduated students from the University of Minnesota. The CyberOptics office later relocated to 5900 Golden Hills Drive, which is the company’s current headquarters location.

In 1987, CyberOptics designed its first product – a Point Range Sensor – and had 12 full time employees. In 1991, CyberOptics’ first tabletop solder paste inspection (SPI) system – Laser Section Microscope (LSM) – was up and running and LaserAlign™, the first alignment sensor for pick-and-place machines was rolled out in 1993.

Two years later, CyberOptics’ first in-line high-speed SPI system – the CyberSentry – was launched. Around the same time, engineers were working on an automated optical inspection (AOI) system that was added to the product line in 1999 and called the KS AOI. It was the first AOI system to incorporate CyberOptics’ patented revolutionary Statistical Appearance Modeling (SAM) technology. The CyberOptics team introduced several enhanced versions of SPI and AOI systems over the years. CyberOptics’ next-generation SPI and AOI systems – SE 300 Ultra and Flex Ultra were launched in 2005 and 2006 bringing ultra-high speed 3D SPI and lowest false call rate AOI to the market.

Today, with a strong team of 140 employees worldwide and a 24/7 global network of channel partners in 87 locations in 39 countries, CyberOptics’ state-of-the-art inspection solutions are employed in hundreds of manufacturing plants around the world to measure solder paste and other components to eliminate defects and improve yield — providing the critical edge to their customers.

Subodh Kulkarni, Executive Chairman and Interim CEO of CyberOptics, reflected on the development of the company, “Over the last 30 years, CyberOptics has evolved to be a global technology leader in 3D sensors and inspection solutions to the SMT and Semiconductor industry. This has been made possible by our spirit of innovation and strong commitment to excellence in everything we do. With a great lineup of products and many more revolutionary 3D sensors and inspection systems in the making, I am more than excited and optimistic about the years to come. I would also like to thank all the employees for their valuable contributions to the company’s success.”

Founded in 1984, CyberOptics is a recognized leader in AOI and SPI inspection solutions for the global electronics assembly and semiconductor capital equipment markets. Headquartered in Minneapolis, MN, CyberOptics conducts operations in North America, Singapore, China, Japan and Europe.
