RFID PCB Traceability Solution from Cogiscan and Murata Wins NPI Award

Feb 20, 2013

Cogiscan Inc., the leading track, trace and control solutions provider for the electronics manufacturing industry, today announced that it has been awarded a 2013 NPI Award in the Labeling Equipment category for its Murata MAGICSTRAP® Integrated with Cogiscan TTC Middleware.  Cogiscan and Murata Americas (a leading manufacturer of ceramic passive components) combined their respective products to offer a complete PCB track, trace, and control solution for the RFID market.  The award was presented during the IPC APEX Expo in San Diego on Tuesday, February 19, 2013.

The joint Murata-Cogiscan product expands on standard PCB tracking by utilizing UHF RFID technology, which provides a read-writable data repository on the PCB and allows for faster, more reliable scanning.  Since RFID does not require the typical line-of-sight visibility of a barcode, the solution also enables tracking of the finished goods through the supply chain and for customer service and field support.

The seamless integration of Murata's RFID technology with the industry's leading track and trace platform by Cogiscan represents the first time RFID tracking of circuit boards is made available as a plug-and-play technology, greatly simplifying and accelerating the integration with standard factory software systems.

Premiering in 2008, Circuits Assembly’s NPI Awards program is an annual celebration of product excellence in electronics surface mount assembly. Premier products based on the finest examples of creative advancement in technology are chosen by a distinguished panel of industry experts.

Cogiscan partners with leading equipment manufacturers and electronics assemblers to create solutions that can integrate with existing systems to provide factory-wide TTC solutions. The company is committed to the development and continuous improvement of solutions to Track, Trace and Control materials and tools on and off the shop floor.  Murata is a worldwide leader in ceramic passive components.  Murata has developed an innovative RFID product called MAGICSTRAP® that, when mounted on a printed circuit board, acts as a passive UHF Gen2 RFID tag.  This allows the PCB, and in some cases the higher-level assemblies and products that comprise this PCB, to be uniquely identified and tracked for a variety of purposes.  For more information, visit www.murataamericas.com/rfid.

MAGICSTRAP® is the trademark of Murata Mfg. Co. Ltd.
