New Course and BUZZ Session at IPC APEX EXPO Help Industry Prepare for Conflict Minerals Compliance

Jan 22, 2013

Conflict minerals compliance is expected to be more burdensome than the RoHS Directive. To help ensure that companies in the electronics industry have the information they need, IPC will host a number of educational meetings in conjunction with IPC APEX EXPO®.

The professional development course Basics of Conflict Minerals Compliance (PD53), on Monday, February 18, 2013, will help attendees understand the complexities of the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) conflict minerals regulation and how to comply.
During the course, Lawrence Heim, director, Elm Consulting Group and Fern Abrams, IPC director of government relations and environmental policy, will provide in-depth information on the fundamentals of the regulation and tools to develop a program for compliance.  Abrams and Heim will also cover third-party audits; Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) due diligence guidelines; supply chain communication, questionnaires and data exchange; reporting to customers, the public and SEC; and leading companies’ compliance programs.

On Wednesday, February 20, Abrams will moderate a free BUZZ session on conflict minerals (BZ4). Heim, along with Amanda Davidson, Freescale Semiconductor and John Plyler, Research In Motion, will discuss tools for regulatory compliance and customers’ requirements.
The professional development course and BUZZ session on conflict minerals are excellent learning opportunities for those in the electronics industry who are concerned about how this regulation affects their companies and their customers — and who need to understand the complexities of compliance,” said Abrams.

On Thursday, February 21 and Friday, February 22, two IPC committees will discuss specific efforts to develop tools for conflict minerals compliance. The 2-18h Conflict Minerals Data Exchange Task Group will continue development of a data exchange standard for the exchange of supply chain data necessary for compliance with the conflict minerals regulation and OECD due diligence guidelines; and the E-30 Conflict Minerals Due Diligence Committee will discuss IPC-1081, Conflict Minerals Due Diligence Guidance, which will assist the electronics industry in complying with due diligence requirements for conflict minerals.

For more information on these conflict minerals meetings at IPC APEX EXPO or other standards development meetings, professional development courses  and BUZZ sessions that will take place, visit www.IPCAPEXEXPO.org. Also at the event, an exhibition with more than 400 of the industry's top suppliers and the industry’s premier technical conference will be held.
