SMTA Space Coast Chapter to Present Their First Technical Program in the Orlando Area

Sep 28, 2009

September 28, 2009 – The Surface Mount Technology Association (SMTA) Space Coast Chapter will present a two-session technical conference addressing green issues in electronics manufacturing on Wednesday, October 28, 2009 at the Gaylord Palms Hotel and Convention Center in Kissimmee, Florida. The presentations will be the chapter’s first in the Orlando area. The conference will also run in conjunction with the Southern Design-2-Part Show being held October 28 & 29, 2009 at the Gaylord Palms Convention Center.

"We have always wanted to hold an event up in the Orlando area," said Eileen Hibbler, President of the SMTA Space Coast Chapter. "There is a lot of electronics manufacturing in that region and with most of our chapter events in and around Melbourne, it is not easy for our Orlando members to join us to learn and network together. Being able to hold this conference in conjunction with the Southern Design-2-Part Show was an opportunity that allowed us to make it happen."

"Emerging Technical Challenges in the Pb-Free Era," will be presented by Christopher Nash, Technical Support Engineer of Indium Corporation, from 9:00 AM - 11:00 AM. Pb-free electronic manufacturing is no longer a novel concept, but this doesn’t mean that the challenges associated with Pb-free manufacturing have vanished. The continuing miniaturization of electronics and new directives requiring halogen-free manufacturing, have further complicated the issue. This presentation will address many Pb-free challenges and provide detailed technical solutions.

In the afternoon, "Go Greener in Your Cleaner," will be offered by Axel Vargas, Application Engineer, and Sheldon Brennan, Southeast Sales Manager, both of Zestron America, at 1:00 PM – 3:00 PM. With higher cleaning performance requirements and increased environmental regulations, the cleaning process has become a focal point for many manufacturers. The presentation will focus on cleaning process benchmarking and the comparison of established cleaning processes with newer process technologies. The authors will present recent cleaning challenges and solutions, and will assess their effectiveness and limitations while adhering to higher environmental standards.

The presentations are open to SMTA members and non-members. The cost per session is $10 for members and $20 for non-members. For more information please visit

The Southern Design-2-Part Show will provide design engineers, manufacturing engineers, manufacturing managers, and purchasers their best opportunity of the year to meet local and national job shops and contract manufacturers to source custom parts, components, services, and design. Already the largest show in the region to focus exclusively on contract manufacturing services, the 2009 Southern Design-2-Part Show will have over 100 of the finest American contract manufacturing companies exhibiting their design-through-manufacturing services covering more than 300 product categories for the electronics, metal, plastics, and rubber industries.

Show hours are 10:00 AM-3:00 PM on Wednesday, October 28, and 10:00 AM-3:00 PM on Thursday, October 29. For more information about the Southern Design-2-Part Show or to register for free show admission, visit http://www.D2P.com.
