SMTA Annual Awards Announced

Oct 05, 2007

The FOUNDER'S AWARD honors individuals who have made exceptional contributions to the industry as well as support and service to the SMTA. This year's award is being presented to Jeff Kennedy, Director Advanced Manufacturing Engineering, Celestica, Inc.

Jeff joined SMTA in 1988, and was a driving force in the Upper Midwest Chapter. He held officer positions there including President, Treasurer, and Vice President Technical Programs, in many instances, serving more than one term. Jeff has been an active Member-At-Large for the Upper Midwest Chapter since 1996 and continues to assist in organizing the chapter's annual golf outing. Jeff has also been involved nationally in SMTA conferences, including SMTA International and the Pan Pac, as a speaker as well as Chair and Co-Chair. While serving on the SMTAI committee he had the responsibility for developing the manufacturing/assembly track of papers. He knows how to find the strongest papers and who to contact to help him. In addition to this, Jeff launched and chaired SMTA's Medical Electronics Conference for its first two years. Jeff is one of our industry colleagues who is always accessible to us, responds immediately, takes charge, and always has the best of the industry in mind. When one thinks of leadership and dedication to the SMTA and the industry over MANY years, Jeff Kennedy is the name that comes to the forefront. Four years ago Jeff received our SMTA Excellence in Leadership Award. This Year our Awards Committee felt that Jeff is the quintessential candidate for the Founder's Award because he exemplifies the qualities and the commitment that "makes him stand out above the rest" as a leader in our industry. We are pleased to honor Jeff Kennedy as the recipient of the 2007 Founder's Award.

The MEMBER OF TECHNICAL DISTINCTION AWARD recognizes individuals who have made significant and continuing contributions to the SMTA. This year our Awards Committee selected two individuals to receive the Member of Technical Distinction Award. The first award honors Andrew Mawer, Manager, Packaging Analysis Lab, Freescale Semiconductor.

Andrew Mawer, who joined SMTA in 1997, was nominated for the Member of Technical Distinction award because of his volunteer service to the SMTA by means of sharing both his leadership ability as well as his technical expertise. Andrew joined the SMTA in 1997 and has taken an active role in "sharing the knowledge" ever since. He has been an extremely active participant in SMTA International by serving on the SMTAI Technical Committee. He began this role back in 1996 with SMI. For nine years he has overseen the development of the advanced packaging track. Andrew demonstrates his leadership ability year after year while serving on this committee. Andrew has also presented a paper at almost every SMI/SMTAI conference. Two of these papers (Plastic BGA Solder Joint Reliability Considerations/1994 and Automotive PBGA Assembly and Board-Level Reliability With Lead-Free Versus Lead-Tin Inerconnect/2000) won the "best of conference" or "best of proceedings" awards.

Andrew has taught courses for the SMTA Academy program, and consistently receives excellent reviews. In 2007 he took a leadership role in the development of our successful Advanced Packaging Workshop in RTP. Andrew also serves on the SMTA Journal Committee as well as SMTA Technical Committee and is always available to respond to questions regarding any area of advanced packaging. As a member of the Journal Committee he works with other volunteers to review, evaluate and solicit articles for the quarterly Journal of SMT. Andrew is also very active with the Austin CTEA chapter where he has served tirelessly as both as the chapter Vice President and also President.

Andrew is not only a strong technologist and willing volunteer, but he is an all around great person who is respected by all who know him. It is with great pleasure we recognize Andrew today as a recipient of the 2007 SMTA Member of Technical Distinction Award.

Our second MEMBER OF TECHNICAL DISTINCTION AWARD honors Dr. Krishnaswami Srihari of SUNY Binghamton. Krishnaswami Srihari is a Distinguished Professor in the Department of Systems Science and Industrial Engineering at the Watson School, SUNY, Binghamton, NY. He has been a member of the SMTA for the past seven years.

"Hari" has been an active member of the SMTA since 2000. His most significant contribution to the SMTA from a technical standpoint is the support he has given to the next generation by serving as faculty advisor to the Binghamton University SMTA Student Chapter. He was the driving force in forming our active SMTA student chapter at SUNY Binghamton. Hari has touched many, many students by teaching hundreds (perhaps a thousand) students in SMT processes and professional practice.

Hari is currently serving the SMTA nationally as a member of the SMTA's Corporate Advisory Council. Additionally, he has authored or co-authored papers, as well as presented many of them at the SMTA Pan Pacific, SMTA International, SMTA Optoelectronics, SMTA Nepcon, and the list goes on and on. Hari is a very familiar face at SMTA events and we truly appreciate all that he has done for the SMTA - and keeps on doing.

The EXCELLENCE IN LEADERSHIP AWARD honors SMTA members who stand out as strong leaders in the Association. The 2007 recipient of this award is Michelle Ogihara of Seika Machinery, Inc.

Michelle has been a familiar face at many SMTA events throughout the years. She joined the SMTA in 2001 and has been an active member from that date forward. She has shown outstanding support and dedication to our LA/Orange County SMTA Chapter and SMTA National. She is currently serving a second term as President of the chapter. She has held various officer positions in the chapter for many years. Her enthusiasm and energy shows no bounds. She is a great leader who has gone above and beyond her job description and has come up with innovative ideas to increase membership, involve more corporate members with annual corporate breakfasts and secure top-notch speakers at chapter meetings. She has arranged for great tours each year working very hard with potential companies to convince them to support the chapter by holding a tour of their facility. Nationally, Michelle Ogihara serves on the SMTA International Exhibitors Committee, Chapter Leaders Committee, and is the 2007 Co-Chair of SMTA's MSD Council. Michelle's most admirable trait is her way of making those who meet her feel her genuine concern and love of people.

The EXELLENCE IN INTERNATIONAL LEADERSHIP AWARD goes to Richard Short of Indium Corporation of America for his continuous commitment to SMTA with regard to our international focus.

Rick Short has been a member of the SMTA for over 20 years. During that time he has volunteered countless hours to the SMTA, most recently through the Marketing Committee and SMTAI Exhibitor Committee. As a member of the Marketing Committee, he helped drive the recent campaign to promote the upcoming SMTAI Orlando event. He also played a significant role in the design of the marketing materials for the show, including the donation of Indium's graphic design team. Additionally, he created and developed the "Live Chat Room" program that is unique to this exhibition. As a result of the promotional campaign developed by this committee (and the image inertia of the SMTA), SMTAI 2007 was sold out very early. Rick has also helped the SMTA with general organizational branding and image development, including the creation and development of special programs, pieces of literature, and logo work. His vision in the field of marketing has helped the SMTA with marketing and Marcom strategy, as well as essential idea generation.

Over the years Rick has led meetings, facilitated committee discussions, and worked closely with executives behind-the-scenes. He worked with individuals in both Australia and Malaysia to facilitate the creation of SMTA opportunities and chapters in those countries. He then consulted with these local chapters to promote their programs to the SMT industry in those regions. Most recently Rick secured key domain name addresses and designed the initial SMTA Penang website. This work was voluntary and gratis. All intellectual properties were donated to the local chapter.

The SMTA+ CORPORATE PARTNERSHIP AWARD is being presented to Celestica, Inc. headquartered in Toronto, Canada. Celestica joined the SMTA as Corporate Member in 1995, and was one of the first companies to sign up for our SMTA Global Membership. A membership, which allows them to share SMTA knowledge with their employees around the world! During this time they have supported local chapter officers as well as a member of our national SMTA Board of Directors.

Over the years Celestica has been an active supporter of ALL SMTA technical programs and conferences. This ranges from participation on the SMTAI Technical Committee to serving as chairs, co-chairs and speakers at almost every conference the SMTA has offered. Over the years hundreds of Celestica engineers and technicians have attended our programs with 16 of their engineers receiving certification from the SMTA. This is higher than any other EMS company in the world.

The CHAPTER OF THE YEAR recognizes an SMTA chapter that has shown exemplary commitment to our objective"Sharing the Knowledge". The overall rating of each chapter is measured in the following areas: membership growth, regular meeting scheduling, timely reporting and communication, creative and informative technical programming, special projects, contributions and volunteer service on SMTA committees.
