large smt inductors moving in the reflow oven

Electronics Forum | Sat Feb 06 16:28:09 EST 2010 | mystkldy

I have some large ROHS SMT inductors that are moving during the reflow process. I have tried adding extra solder, gluing and doing both. I don't know what else to try, any suggestions?

we are using convection ovens and we face the issue when changing from Pb to RoHS but also even when change top side to bottom side if the diference on the profiles needs to go from a high temp to low, we are opening the hood but we would like not to

What is the correct FR4 for RoHS? This PCB is a 4layer board. When we get the boards from the supplier they are properly packed in vaccum sealed bags without HIC card but there is desicant in side.

My recollection is that RoHS limits for lead is 0.1% of the weight of any homogeneous material in the assembly.

You need to find out what is not compliant about the part. Also some parts can be compliant even though they are not stated to be. Even if the leads had a tin lead finish it may not be enough to make it not compliant. Anyways there is not any body in

Usually not but you should check the manufacturer's data sheet for that IC. It should say in the datasheet what the maximum reflow soldering temperature is.

This application is military, which requires a minimum of 3% Pb on the terminations, or mulitple mitigations for tin whisker prevention.

Lead free designated soldering irons

I would recommend not to mix leaded irons to do non-leaded rework. Especially, if you are working on ROHS compliance project that will create contamination. Weller and Hakko still have tips for leaded soldering tips, you can chechk on their web sites

whats the type of paset and the type of profile you're running. Doesn't look like enough heat to me on the first set of pics I see. Are you running ROHS BGAs on a lead profile?
