Subject: AOI for solder inspection

Fellows,
We are considering getting an AOI machine to inspect boards that our vendors are giving us (we outsource the assembly of PCBAs). We have low volumes of boards, but every time a defect does slip by our human inspectors, it causes a lot of problems down the line. Most of our defects come from solder defects (bridges and bad solder joints). We evaluated a MIRTEC MV-3 and have mixed feelings about it; it's quite easy to program, but the defects don't always show up that clearly with the machine, and the side-angle cameras are awkward to use and have insufficient resolution (and can't be upgraded). Does anyone have experience with solder inspection with AOI machines that they could share with me? If MIRTEC doesn't make the cut, will other brands of AOI machine offer significantly better performance? I'm looking for top-notch solder inspection, even if it's more difficult to program.

IT IS CAPABLE OF HANDLE SUCH THING AT GREAT LEVEL ,JUST NEED GOOD UNDERSTANDING OF PROGRAMMING AND DEBUGGING , WE ACHIEVED 100 PPM WITH HELP OF IT , U GO FOR 5 CAMERA WHICH WILL DETECT YOUR IC PIN LEAD LIFT / COPLANERITY DEFECT.

Thanks for the suggestion, but on samsung's website, I only seem to see a paste inspection machine and not a post-reflow inspection machine. Does anyone have experience with the MVP or SAKI AOI machines?

I've been the AOI programmer for around 5 years now. The equipment I use is the Orbotech VT-9300 & VT-9500 systems. The programming isn't too difficult, mostly Grey-scale shadow measurement through application algorithms.

Three levels of lighting and CCD cameras do well with solder joint "shapes" down to the 0402 chip, amongst many IC packages. It should work for you.

I programmed Orbotech VT-8000 and VT-9300 for around 5 years also. We have been using VI Technology Vi3k3 machines for the past 2 years. I find them to be far superior to the Orbotech machines in every way. To be fair, the Orbotech models we used were pretty old. They still used OS/2 operating system.

Yes. OS2 is the OS too, get it.

Wouldn't you figure....right after we buy the VT9500, Orbotech comes out with a Windows XP Professional platform. A more "user friendly" operating system.

I'm sure that most systems out there are superior in performance, especially those with component libraries which are upgraded. I've invented quite a few new component "SHAPES" myself.

Its all "SMOKE and MIRRORS", but who has the thickest smoke and cleanest mirrors?

Instead of you spend money on AOI,my recomendation will be to install SPI machine ( solder paste inspection machine)since most of your defect are solderability issues.AOI only will ensure no escapee to backend/human escapee but SPI will help to to ensure no escapee and also you able to identify the defect at post solder paste printing station and rectify the problem. KOH YOUNG has a very good and effective machine.

Hi, I have 4 years as an AOI Process Engineer and we are working with 3 types of AOI - Marantz 22X, VI3000 and Omron (RNS & VT-WIN2). For solder joint inspection (solder meniscus quality, insufficient solder, wetting problems, shorts (bridges) Omron is the best with its 3 colour ccd camera and patented three colour highlight technology. Hi Nemo,

In my factory we have an offline AOI from VISCOM for two SMT lines. It's not so easy to program, but the results are very good. Anyway you should have to think that an AOI system needs a human inspector and a technician to debug the programs continuously, and you need a very stable process.

To evaluate correctly this kind of equipments you should have to think about three parameters: real fails, fals calls and firts pass yield.

Hi everybody,
First of all, to have process under 100% control you should have AOI after every active process in the pcb assembly line :
- Post printing (2D or 3D Solder paste inspection machine);
- Post reflow;
- Post selective(wave solder).
It is the best way and I know a place where it was implemented and they have optimized their processes for 3-4 months, after that they are using just post reflow AOI to filter casual defects. But it needs a lot of investments. We have just post reflow/post wave(selective) soldering AOI and results are very good. For this reason the role of the post reflow AOI splits into 2 directions: to serve as feedback for the printing & smt processes - when one defect appears 2-3 and more times at the same place so operator should pay attention to the stencil cleaning, paste added and some nozzle malfunctioning and second, but not less important role is to stop defects pass through the AOI machine unattended (repaired or scrapped).
Yes, I deeply agree that AOI is highly dependant on human factor - person, who creates, debugs and constantly improves and updates the programs. It is a time consuming process, but when well organized, I can assure you it can give excellent results.

I suggest to buy a Good printer so your AOI and SPI will not be your consideration.

MPM Acella will be the best choice.

If you are unable to resolve your quality issues with your current vendor you may need to change to another. Is your vendor doing any kind of electrical testing prior to shipment? Where have their corrective & preventive actions led them in resolving their workmanship issues?

Oh, my dear, printer is just a part of the full picture. Without good and stable pick and place what if the printer is excellent???It is all important - printer, solder paste,stencil,P&P,oven,AOI and of course good process engineers or whatsoever are called at your place. So you have to invest, IC test and Final (or functional or End of Line) test never have 100% defect coverage so AOI is always a must for companies producing automotive or high reliability products. It is better to invest 40-60K or more euro (or $), but to be sure that your client will not claim defects and charge you for this. 5 years ago a Japanese company imposed to us the need for AOI as an obligatory step for entering our European market. Now we are very happy and all other customers are satisfied by the high level of error detection. Don't delude yourself, human eye is limited in endurance, repeatability and quality of detecting the defects, while well programmed AOI is more reliable and effective than 100 operators set in a row for visual inspection. Of course AOI is criteria of the maturity of the management and quality department in each company, it can not be imposed by force. It is a question of perception of the market today and your goals to be a serious player on it.
