From the beginning, programmable controllers have been designed with ease of maintenance in mind. With virtually all components being solid-state, maintenance is reduced to the replacement of modular, plug-in components. Fault detection circuits and diagnostic indicators (see Figure 1-22), incorporated in each major component, signal whether the component is working properly or malfunctioning. In fact, most failures associated with a PLCbased system stem from failures directly related to the field input/output devices, rather than the PLC’s CPU or I/O interface system (see Figure 1-23). However, the monitoring capability of a PLC system can easily detect and correct these field device failures.
