Wave Solder: Flux Validation

Wave Solder: Flux Validation | 18 May, 2004

Hey guys,

I was wondering if there was a standard set of tests used to evaluate flux chemistries for wave soldering. For several years, we've been spraying Alpha 871-25A flux from Alpha Metals onto our printed circuit boards with relatively good success. We are now faced with the decision to evaluate other fluxes. Could someone recommend a good starting point?

Thanks in advance.

Thanks Dave! I'll see if I can find the standard on IPC's website or inhouse (our company) if I am lucky. I appreciate it.

What type of flux are you guys using? No clean? or Water-soluble?

If you are beginning a new evaluation of fluxes, make sure you consider an ultrasonic spray fluxing system with recipricating head. A fluxer from Ultrasonic Systems can add valuable data to your wave solder process

Good Point- If you are beginning a new evaluation of fluxes, make sure you consider an ultrasonic spray fluxing system. A fluxer from Sono Tek (www.sono-tek.com) can add valuable data to your wave solder process.

regards. Cal *NOTE:I do not receive any perks or monies from the above mentioned company.

Thanks for the advice regarding the ultrasonic spray fluxer ... we are currently using Delta Wave 6622c wave solder machine with dual spray heads (the ability to use two completely different kinds of flux chemistries). It's a great system that works so much more reliably than what we had prior. I just wanted to know how to go about in evaluating a different chemistry especially with so many kinds on the market.

I did found the J-STD- 001C, Appendix B, "Material and Process Compatibility Testing mentioned earlier. It does provide a good starting point. Now I just need to request sample flux and start testing ...

Thanks again.
