Why doesn't the Universal GSM read black fids? If you have the answer let me know. Thanks

None of the vision systems can really read a black object. In order to recognize an object a light source is required. The light is reflected from the object through an optical lens to the CCD chip. There is almost no light coming back from a black object, which means non of the pixels of the CCD chip are being activated. The algorithm of the vision processor can only process information with pixels activated. However, vision processors can transform the information, looking at the board as a dark object and the fiducial as a light object, in order to compute the pixel data. I know your vision processor is capable of transforming data, but I dont know anything about the Universal Software. Do you have that feature, when you teach the fiducial?

Thanks for answering. The only thing I could find on the Universal GSM is the color I want to make the fids (white, black or LED) and the lighting level, (confidence %, In and Out). Other than that I cannot find anything else that will help me change the color.

I am not sure but I thought the black fiducial is used for X-out board/panel.

I'm sorry I missed the first part of this discussion. Why are your fids black? Is this something you requested? Is it a board defect that you are trying to "work around"? What is the black material?

The black fid is a routing hole that I am trying to use for a fid. The board house did not manufacture any fids for the board I am building. This is becoming more frequent in the boards I am recieving.

M.L. Feather- You may be better off using a square (rectangle) SMT pad instead of a Router hole. Since all the placement data will be referenced off the "fid" you use - placement problems could happen if Router holes are used as the router path can vary from board to board. Ultimatly, you are looking for something unique and with the best contrast.I would also refrain from using any sceening or reference designator symbols as they vary also.

Try a couple via holes.

I guess, you tried already to change the color to black. In-Out, is this a submenu for I/O, or do you find numbers in there from 0 to 244? If so, than this may be the color transformation menu. If you find two columns, then the higher number should be your black fiducial and the lower the board color. Change the higher number to a low number and the low number to a high. Again, Im just guessing. A manual would help, or try and error mode.

Does your machine have pattern recognition, so you can program a corner of a trace, or some other unique feature of the board?

Are there any plated through holes on the board? I find they usually work pretty good when the normal routes fail.

I have never heard of using a corner of a trace before. How interesting. However, the Universal GSM only gives me the standard shapes of fiducials. (round, square, diamond, cross etc.)

Thank you for replying. M.L. Feather

You can go into the vision diagnostics menu and create custom fiducial shapes. This is taught in the advanced programming school. I have done this in class but never used it since.

The GSM can process black fiducials. To do so the fid must be programmed dark on a light background. You will need to adjust the lighting to optimize the contrast in order to be successful. If this does not work I belive that UIC offers lighting kits that can assist.

We also do not recommend using tooling holes as a fiducials.

It's obvious the problem is in the software. Because they tried to make it user friendly, you can't use the vision system at all. You only choose the type and everything else is done internal. that's why they missed some possibilites.I know mashines with more flexible software. In theese machines you can make recognition for everything. That;s why I sudgest you to call Universal and ask them for your recognition. They have to send it to you. It;s obvious the problem is simple and it's their mistake.
