Hello Jim,

Is any special tooling required for press-fitting a connector?

Hello Floyd,

Yes, special tooling is required. The tooling usually consists of a press, push-in tooling and support plate tooling.

The presses can range from relatively simple arbor type presses to automated hydraulic presses with sophisticated control systems.

The push in tooling is that which presses on top of the connector. This can be anything from a flat surface for 'flat rock" connectors (usually female socket types) or intricately machined plates to accomodate male pin type connectors. The support tooling is required to distribute the push in forces more evenly and prevent the PCB from buckling under the forces.

Best regards Jim Zanolli
