I'm starting to see faducials used more and more on pick and place equipment and this sounds like a good place to use them. Does anyone out there have feeders with faducials on them yet? I'm told that a couple machines are running these to place 0402's and smaller. Are they helping? When the feeder runs out of parts and you install a new reel do you have to calibrate the feeder to the tape? Is this done on the machine or on a remote fixture? How often does the machine refer to them (just at the beginning of the 1st board or every couple boards/parts)?

Mydata uses fiducials on their feeders. I am not sure whether or not your are familiar with Mydata feeders, but its pretty basic. The feeders are actually magazines made up of multiple individual feeders. Example: There are 16 8mm feeders in (one)8mm magazine. That magazine will have one fiducial on it. You initially locate the fiducial on the magazine and individually trim each seperate feeder that is in the magazine. If you need to pull the feeder out and replace a part number it is not really necessary to re-trim the magazine because it is located in position by locating pins. But if for whatever reason you decided to move the feeder to another position on the machine, or put the feeder on another machine all you have to do is locate the fiducial. You would not have to go in and trim each individual feeder. The locating of the fiducial puts a global offset in the entire feeder.

Fiducial recognition on the Siemens machine works like the Mydata. Once you select this option, fiducials will be recognized when a new program is send. You can also select recognition as part of the feeder refill function mode. There is no automatic repeat recognition after feeder re-fill, because the machine does not "know" if the feeder was temporarily removed. Feeder fiducials improve deviations from the feeder table and feeder tilt. Once the machine "finds" the first component it will continuously improve the pick position by recognizing a component offset on the nozzle. I feel, this is a must have option for 0402 and smaller. The downside of this option is, that it makes the operator less sensitive for errors. If the feeder is tilted because there was a component under the feeder, the machine will correct for the offset. Because the feeder is not stable in this tilted position, you can expect many pick up errors despite fiducial.

Thanks for the information. Our company is eventually going to have to use 0201's and I'm thinking of all the possible problems that will be encountered. I'm not sure if it's true for all feeders but I believe they tend to have a small amount of play between the tape and the sprocket. I've noticed that if you play around with the take up reel for the cover tape you could get the pocket tape position to slightly change. I'm hoping that if the pull on the take up reel is consistant it shouldn't be a problem.

The play of the tape is quite significant as I mentioned in an earlier thread. Tape width can vary between 8.1 +/- 0.2mm. Demos on 0201's are most likely done with 8.1 +/- 0.05mm tape. I guess you are referring to the cover tape pull, which can disposition the tape in forward direction. Siemens solved this problem quite well. The sprocket wheel turns forward to advance the tape, but than it turns backwards to take the slack out of the sprocket pins and sprocket holes. This way, when the cover tape is pulled off, you will rather brake the cover tape, than pull the carrier tape out of position.

Corrective pick up on Fuji machines is, as far I know, not implemented. Sanyo solved the problem on their chip-shooter, by rotating the component camera on the same arc than the pick correction.

CP and most other turret style machine have a fixed camera and cannot "see" the feeder.

We use Sanyo TCM3000 series machines to place 0201 compnents and they run excellently. The Sanyo machine has corrective pick up on the x and y and H axis but also has a automatic corrective pick up where the component camera looks at a combination of usually every 3 picks and calculates if the pickup needs to be adjusted on x or y.

For 0201 placement Siemens can also use the fiducial camera to locate the actual tape pocket and use it as the fiducial. First time pick rate is greater than 99.9% for 0201 components.
