HASL VS. OSP | 10 June, 1998

Okay, here's a stupid question. What exactly is HASL and OSP? We are going to delve into this technology where I work and I want to utilize the wealth of knowledge here to make life easier. Specifically, what are the differences, the advantages, disadvantages. Also, no need to go rummaging through tech pubs or anything like that, just a brief rundown (I can figure the rest out myself). Thanks.

Thanks. These are methods used in the PCB manufacturing process to protect the copper pads. HASL is a tin/lead coating over the copper pads, and OSP is an organic coating. HASL is more durable, where OSP can be easily damaged during handling of PCB's. HASL is still mostly used, but it can be a problem when you have fine pitch components on the PCB, because HASL sometimes is not flat enough fir fine pitch components. OSP gives a flatter surface. I have not had very little experience with OSP, but I would rather go for gold plating (another type of PCB finish)in case of fine pitch. Hope this helps.

Thanks., Jason, Great questions. I needn't say more than I have already, but it's great to see so much interest in alternatives concerning solder termination area coatings. There ways are getting better and more available as HASL and OSP'S go away. Earl Moon
