Reclaim - bent leads (SMT) | 20 August, 1998

Posted by Kallol Chakraborty on August 20, 1998 at 09:33:52: Hi folks, Is there any reclaiming process for bent leads(mostly QFP). Root cause seems to be handling and packaging. Also like to know if there is any equipment that we could consider for this matter. Is it possible to recondition component after SMART operation ? Regards Kc.

Kc, Bent leads are a major defect driver for us, and despite much research I have yet to find a lead straightening device which is not labor intensive. I do however have some limited information about a machine called the "Top Form 2020" by Polytool. I have yet to research this particular machine. I have listed the contact information below: Polytool 116, Litang Kampung Jawa, Kawasan Perindustrian Bayan Lepas, 11900 Pulau Pinang, Malaysia Tel: 804-845888 Fax: 604-842119 We have found that proper handling and packaging will remove much of the bent lead problem. Unfortunately our root cause of this bent lead problem is the quality of the components as shipped by the suppliers. Chris Fontaine Manufacturing Engineer Sanders, a Lockheed Martin Co.

Re: Reclaim - bent leads (SMT) | 16 October, 1998

In the past year I have introduced a component reclaim process. There are a number of machines on the market, though it's true that reclaim is still a fairly labour intensive activity. We have had good results with a German machine manufactured by Rood Technology. Results are further improved by restricting reclaim to handling damaged devices which have not been soldered. The addition of an imaging system to verify that the device is 'as new' produces good results. The imaging system is also a useful tool when assessing vendor quality.
