I am planning to bye AOI machine for my first SMT line. Mirtek & Kohyoung both has quoted me.Considering price & performance which machine should I go with.

I can only speak for Mirtec, and no I am not affiliated with them at all. We have had a Mirtec AOI for at least 9 years. We have never had any major issues with it. There support is very good and usually they get right back with you if you cannot get someone immediately for help. my 2c

I can only speak for Mirtec and Yestech AOI for SMT Solder Inspection. We do use Koh-Young AOI for Solder Paste Inspection. As usual ,you need to identify exactly what it is you are trying to achieve with your AOI, if you are just trying to fill a space in your SMT line with an AOI machine, then any machine will meet the requirement. If you are specifically trying to eliminate or catch a particular defect, you might find that some machines perform better than others for certain specific little jobs or inspections.

Where and what do you plan to inspect? Post Print (solder paste volume and print accuracy?) Post placement, but pre-reflow? (SMT placement check only) Post Reflow Soldering? (Placement accuracy and reflow characteristics?) Post reflow and through hole (all locations check, plus solder joints)

'hege - I have no affiliation nor interest with any company mentioned in my post(s)

They are both very good machines however Kohyoung will give you better first pass results meaning a lot less false calls and when you run the first board after initial programming you have to fix very few things. However the cost is a lot more. This is not to knock Mirtek its a close second.

So what problems you are facing with Mirtec? Can u check coplanarity, less solder, polarity, dry solder,Pads not properly got the heat for 1005 package. Can u also check 0105 components that is surrounded by some tall components? what about false call? Can you share me which model u r using and for how many years?

Thanks// Shahrat

Hi,

I have MV-7xi from Mirtec. Mine is equipped with the best camera they have as well as telecentric lens which give you very good resolution and view. Machine handles very good most of the defects in SMT. However, when we go to the solder joints inspection, it is very hard to teach the machine - a lot of false calls(it is in the nature of pattern match algorithm machines). In our production we run 10-15 different assemblies a day and I can't spend the time to tweak the machine for solder inspection. I have it on only for assemblies we run in higher volumes.

Hey Syed, I've been running the MV-9 for just over a year. We shopped around very extensively (two APEX shows) before switching from yestech to mirtec and we bought two of the best systems they had to cover the four lines we run.

Two systems are fast enough to keep up with our four lines, we run a high mix low volume setup and I feel they have been ideal for us. The software is robust and shadow moire style 3d detection is amazing. You can see the dimple in the pin 1 corner of an IC if you want.

Polarity is generally checked by the overhead camera and pattern recognition algorithms. Any AOI will do a great job checking polarity and presence. There's probably a cell phone app for it =)

If you are working with 0105 chip components you will want the best camera available. Additionally, I would highly recommend using 3d inspection on these parts since head-on-pillow is the most common failure and almost impossible to see dependably with a camera. If you have a 0105 completely surrounded by tall parts, you're hosed, but as long as you have at least two directions open you can use those two projectors to measure the part height and see if it's picked up on one side.

Checking height, BGA co-planarity and the shape/quality of solder joints is really where the competition is between AOI systems and Mirtec has amazing capabilities. I really can't speak to the Kohyoung system as they weren't especially impressive at the two shows I went to. Honestly, we came down to Mirtec and someone else and I'm happy with our choice.

WEll unfortunately I know the answer to your dilemma all too well and I will make it easy for you. The Koh Young takes a miracle to program and the Mirtec has a superior software and 3D system when you have the MV9 system. Just to day I was measuring PCBs with 800 solder deposits in 8 locations each and then measuring the tilt of the 400 placed component in 3D at 8 locations as well and with a Customer tolerance of 88 microns. But I have found that the accuracy and repeatability of this machine is in the fraction of microns(+/-.3microns i believe) This machine has done nothing but increase its value as time has gone on and revolutionized our control and understanding of quality. We had to reprogram over 1000 programs that already resided in our old AOI systems and achieved it in under 1 year. Painful but worth it, you wouldn't get far with Koh Young in that respect I assure you. Good Luck....Anvil

The MV-7 OMNI is a Great Machine, has the same 3D Solution MV-9 Quad Moire Multi Frequency System. You will not be disappointed, you will find new ways to use the 3D system as time goes on and it is rock stable and incredibly precise. Either the MV-7 Omni or the MV-9 can be used for Solder Paste inspection, although they do not have specific programming for this.....I know it could be a conflict internally at Mirtec but having a single AOI that can do solder paste inspection as well as normal AOI duties is a plus in my book. Good Luck and I personally believe you made the right choice. Best Regards, Anvil

The surprise to me with this entire post is why CyberOptics (USA) has never come up in this conversation. The new SQ3000 will change the 3D AOI market for the better with their MRS technology. I have witnessed the image quality from this new sensor and neither Mirtec or KY can compete. CyberOptics was the pioneer in SPI and now fighting for presence in the AOI market. Before you run off and buy a machine based upon a narrow 2 horse race, take a closer look at CyberOptics. You will be pleasantly surprised at what you did not know. Also, for every fairly tale "experienced based" post you read, there is always a horror story from other first hand users. I am also a non-paid poster, but being in the industry since 1992, my overall knowledge of both companies is extensive: Mirtec is a respectable company/products - KY is debatable in all categories. Also, when will US manufacturers start supporting US suppliers? Korea or USA. I know what side of the fence I stand.

Also should look at Viscom 3088Flex Ultra if after AOI with 3D capability. The camera optics module has many innovative features, super fast data capture - much faster then Mirtek and KohYoung. Both these companies have taken 3DSPI and turned into AOI so are slow data capture low performance. Viscom has taken 25Y in AOI and created a better 3D optical module with on fly dual resolution cameras.

Hi, It depend on your budget, try to buy those maker can support spare & service . No meaning you buy high end machine but no service support. Try to find regional agent can support on call upon machine break down. Also other factor handling process such programming new pcb. Usually your technical staff easy to handling and the most important meet your quality criteria . You have

Hello,

No experience with Mirtec, they are more populair in the States and Asia it seems.

For my company, not only the inspection depth and reducing false fails was important, but also good costumer support. Keep in mind that if you have problems with your machine, that should be operating 24/7, it can not be the case that the system will have to be shut off for a week before someone comes to fix it...

Why don't you do some benchmark first to test out both machines. Bring your own pcb with high density and interesting components.

Anyway, to answer the OP question. For us the Koh Young Zenith works very well. Quite easy to program, it detecs problems the way it's suppose to do. It also reduced our false fails drastically. I did some testing with 0105 components, ...the component is visible, I can test coplanarity it's just that the solder joints can't be inspected. It's just too small. However, they (Koh Young) are working hard on updates and improving the inspection depth. They were the first on the market with 3D as a standard way of inspection, rather then being it an optional way.

Again, do a benchmark for a few days at both (or more) companies before you make up your mind about which ones too bye. You really don't want to buy a machine that turns out to be not suitable for your type of company.

As Lokit mentioned, the support and spare parts are important. Support for Mirtec has always been very fast responding, but the spare parts are different story. Last two times I needed spare part it took them two weeks(parts are coming from Korea)
