DIMA smro 0406 is good machine or not for doing lead free reflow | 9 December, 2014

Hello Folks,

I am getting a Passaat SMRO-0406 reflow machine for auction. So i would like to know is this machine good or bad for doing the lead free re-flow process. The vendor said this machine is 2000 model. We wanted to do the board with size - 14" X 13". Please let me know all the reviews and help me out!!

Thanks

I don't have one, but a lot of ovens of this vintage are on the market because they DO NOT cope well with lead free processes. There is one of these on eBay right now and it even says ROHS is right at the limit of what it can just about manage so thick pcbs or high mass parts will not solder.

Thanks for your reply!! But i dont understand the 300 degree is okay to for lead free process

The 300 degrees is the temperature as measured at the sensor. The actual air temperature just above your PCB may actually be much less. If the oven is properly calibrated then the 300 should represent air temperature at the board but I have seen many ovens where thats not the case. OEMs have different designs and these settings do not mean the oven is lead free compatible.

Also, even if the air temperature above the board is 300C, your board will peak at a lower temperature. Thermal mass of your board seems high give its size so you will see a large delta between air and board temperatures. A small oven with 3-4 zones is typically not sufficient for lead free reflow of larger boards. Look for ovens that have 6+ zones.

Hello,

yes you are absolutely correct. I agree with your point. Last week,I personally checked out my board on Heller 1088 which is a 8 zone reflow oven (4 on top and 4 on bottom) and the soldering came pretty nice.

So comparing with that situation i decided to go with the DIMA SMRO-0406 which is i guess 5 or 6 zone.. Do u have any idea??

Also, i wnated to know how about DIMA SMRO-0506 http://www.ebay.com/itm/Reflow-Oven-with-Mesh-Belt-DIMA-SMRO-0506-PASSAAT-Refurbished-tested-works-/261671121981, is this good for lead-free reflow process.

The longer the oven, the better. You will have much more capabilities in creating the precise profiles the way you want them(with10-12 zone oven). I have worked with ovens from 2 to 12 zones and the difference is huge. In my opinion try to get a 10zones used instead of 4 zones new. Also make sure the oven has a convection(some ovens still are built with infrared).

Hello Sir,

Thanks for your reply. i just got a mail from the DIMA service group and they said the Oven setting is as follows: Max temp settings in each zone (Which is not the temperature on your product, but close to where the air flow comes out of the heating chamber) [Top] Zone1=300 Zone2=300 Zone3=300 Zone4=350

[Bot] Zone1=300 Zone2=300 Zone3=300 Zone4=350

Also: the complete specs for SMRO-0406 is here Please see the link:- https://imageshack.com/i/iq4TU8Wdj

ALso, coming to the convection the DIMA service group said : "Its full convection in the top zones.

The bottom zones are heating elements mounted underneath a thick aluminium plate. So not full IR, but the head is coming from the heated aluminium plates."

So what do you think???

Hello,

So in short, i wanted to know.. for 8 zones i guess that will be a great deal. and the machine made year is 2000. Also, coming to the max. thickness of PCB we have is 0.085 inches.

If you have a chance ask them to bring in one of your products(take board, stencil and some heavy part on the PCB that will absorb a lot of heat). They should be able to screen(even manually) it for you, hand place the part and send it through the oven. If it bakes well you will have 100% your answer.

why all people speak only the temperatur? the speed convoyor is very important too... with lesser zone of reflow you can lower the convoyor speed... but if i must speak about temperature and zone i think the minimum for solder all board in ROHS is 5 zones and 350°

What do you mean by solder in ROHS. Can you please explain me little bit. Is that really important while doing lead free process.

Also, please tell me wether a 8 zone (4 bottm and 4 top) reflow oven with 300 degree max.. Is good to do the lead free soldering or not

Hello,

Also I wanted to tell you. I decided to go with a brand new machine. Please tell me which is the best machine for mid Volume. Samsung, heller, Dima, essemtec, acto USA, C.I.F

Which company do you suggest me.. The best. My duties: We have board size upto 14" x 16" . Also per day I may solder 10 boards minimum. the machine should be capable to do double sided reflow. Should be lead free processing type.. Please let me know.

Thanks

Sounds like your volumes are pretty low. Pick and Place is the bottleneck in the assembly line. Consider an oven that can keep up with the throughput of your P&P.

"The best" is determined on individual cases for a specific application and environment. If you are asking for the best oven brands regarded in the industry, take a look at BTU and Vitronics.

My advice would be to send a sample or scrap of your heaviest board to each oven manufacturer along with the profile as recommended by your paste supplier. Have them profile the board in an oven and to provide data to demonstrate the ovens capability. Once technically they meet this requirement, evaluate on what is best for you according to other variables like overall size, power consumption / operating cost, support, cost, etc.
