Problem with rigid-flex PCB pressing (PVC and PET damage) | 18 October, 2014

I just like to ask if somebody else experienced a similar problem:

We press rigid flex PCBs at 356°F (180°C). The buffer layer construction is:

Plate PET PVC PET PCB etc

So far there were never any problems. But suddenly the PVC becomes very black, the PET gets damaged and the PVC may contaminates the PCB and the press steel.

I wonder if you ever had similar problems. Right now we use PTFE instead of PET, but the much higher cost is of course a problem.

Are you really sure that related to my issue?

Anyway, in the meantime I experimented a bit with a PVC supplier and now I have a soft PVC that can handle my 185°C (365°F) for 90 Minutes. It becomes a little bit yellow - the previous got cat-black.

One problem is, I have to buy a few tons in one go due to the minimum machine load. So if anybody need conformal PVC foil in 200µm (.00787" or 7.87mil) drop me a line.
