MY12 F-MOT-MSETDYN x/12: Position Counter Dead | 3 September, 2014

I am looking for some help for where to look to fix this MY12 problem. We started the machine after the weekend and this error code comes up during initialization. F-MOT-MSETDYN X/12: Position counter dead

MyData tells us our only option is to have a service call, which may be necessary, but I would like to make sure that we didn't just unplug something or have something stuck where it shouldn't be. Any suggestions??? Thanks.

I'm surprised MyData is pushing the service call. They're usually pretty good at walking you through some troubleshooting steps before going straight to the service call.

So, the failure sounds like an encoder failure; the encoders are attached to the motors, and failures could be a result of a bad connection, a bad motor, bad encoder, or bad MOT card (there's a chance of a problem somewhere in the power supply/booster circuits, but that's an outside shot).

To isolate...start by getting into the service menu, where you can load the motor controller software independently. Load the software, and initialize each motor controller. This should confirm the X-MOT failure. Then, swap MOT cards. If the failure moves with the MOT card (swap MOT X with MOT y, for example), your issue is a MOT card, and not a motor problem. If the problem does not move with the MOT card, your issue is likely to be a motor/encoder problem, or an interconnect problem.

Double check all of your connections on the head, and to the motors....reseat all of the connectors. Ensure that the ribbon cable connected to the head is in good repair. Make sure nothing is impeding the X axis movement.

The upside to a MyData service call is that there are a number of things that can go wrong, and if you buy all the replacement parts, it's pretty expensive. If the tech does the work, MyData will let you return the parts that you don't need (he's likely to get there, and tell you to order a MOT card, a motor, and potentially some other things). The downside is it's a multi-day affair (since the techs don't bring any of the major parts with them), costing more money for the service call.

Good luck!

Thanks for the response, Rob. I tried the MOT cards and the problem did not move. I swapped the MOTY with the MOTX, but the MOTX had a small board attached to it that I moved to the MOTY that I tried. Do you know if there is a way to test that small board before I conclude the issue is motor related?

Also, I have looked through the schematics and there appear to be 2 x motors. An x motor for wagon and x for belt. The schematic also shows 2 encoders on the x belt motor. Do you know which encoder/motor is causing this error?

I am going to try calling MyData again to ask for phone support.

Thanks.Rebecca

Hi, Rebecca,

Hmm...two x motors? I'm a couple of years removed from MyData's, but, I don't remember two x-motors. Might be something in the My12's that I didn't see in my older My9 (and certainly not in my TP9).

As to the small board...unfortunately, the only thing I've ever been able to do to MyData boards is inspect them for damaged components.

It is certainly sounding more like a motor/encoder issue. If you want to isolate further, you could swap the X-motor with either the C or Y motors...if I remember correctly, they should be the same parts.

It sounds like you guys have a service contract...if you're calling the US Office in MA for service, ask for Al, he knows the machines pretty well, and ought to be able to help you narrow it down further.

cheers, ..rob

It could very well be the Safety Relay located inside the ELMO PSU (Bottom left in computer cabinet). I just had the same problems on 2 MY9's within 2 months apart. the Part cost around $700.00 from Mydata (Now Mycronic). These fail commonly with older machines. If you are familiar with the extended service menus you can go in and independently move both the X-Wagon Motor and the X-Belt Motor. Both have encoders/Motors. If both do not move then this rules out the motors and encoders because they are independent. In the extended service under board select option for MOT X (X board). Then select motor test. in this menu you can pulse both motors independently. If you want to call me I can help you through this. (540)362-8466 ext.1063 My name is Steve.

If you call service they can also walk you through the motor test. Ask for Glen. Al no longer works for MYDATA.

Both Steve and Rob are on the right track in troubleshooting the error. We've received a fair number of machines that have had similar issues. The motors are independent and both go back to the MOT card of which we have repaired. Let us know if we can help. Have a great weekend guys!

Steve. It would be great if you could talk me through this independent motor test. Is there a good time to call? Thanks. Rebecca

Thank you to all. The problem was dust in the x wagon motor. We cleaned the motor out and everything works again.

You may want to check the brushes in that motor, could very well be the "dust" that you have seen.

The brushes are terribly worn, but we put them back in until we got new ones. We have them and will be replacing tomorrow. Thanks.
