Question about Cost | 6 August, 2012

Hey guys,

I'm new to this forum and registered to ask a question about PCB assembly cost. I was hoping to design a PCB that will be approximately 6" by 6" with about 1100 0805 SMD components on it. Half of them being resistors (3 different values) and half of them being LEDs (6 different colors). The other side of the PCB will have the controller circuitry/components, about 20 or 30 pieces total. In quantities of 1000, is this going to be a large cost just for the assembly? Can anyone throw out a realistic ball park figure? I just want to know a rough estimate before I take the time to design the PCB and get real quotes.

Thanks in advance for your help,

Joe

I would guess a small US/Europe CEM with modest equipment could probably get the assembly cost somewhere close to $15, the volume is large enough that tooling charges may well be irrelevant. Such a CEM might appreciate the freedom to source the parts themselves to maximise the opportunity for margin.

Hello Joe, PCB size 6" *6" is larger board. Resistors and LEDs are easy to do assembly. I think you can ask Beijing Glichn, from PCB stencil printer, SMT reflow oven and LED pick and place machine, they can give some suggestion. The investment is decided by equipments. Automatic is expensive, semi or manual is lower.

Joe,

If you order and take all 1000 boards in one delivery you should be in the $6.00 to $9.00 range for labor only.

Thanks for the replies everyone.

I was hoping the cost would be under $10, and it looks like that might be possible. Time to start designing!

Thanks,

Joe

Joe, While designing the LED panel, will it be used outside or inside, have to taken into the account that use of conformal coating to protect this LED panel from possible moisture penetration into the unit?

This is going to be for indoor, home use. So I don't think I would need anything like that.

Make sure you put fiducials on each board in your design. It's very frustrating to get a simple SMT only board with no fiducials and I need to use inconsistent board features to program the pick and place.
