Does anyone know of a good masking material for conformal coating? The coating is silicon based. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

The adhesive type is the problem generally - latex adhesives used are not compatible with the silicone. Humiseal offer silicone compatible tapes & dots although they are quite expensive. I found a 3M product which is compatible with silicone based coatings - it's called "Powder coat masking tape". ( Blue colour - don't have the 3M product number to hand.) This tape is tough to peel off after a thermal cure but is effective. Best advice is to forget the tape masking process and use masking boots if possible - for connectors try the mating connector for the type used. We also use custom machined masks which pay for themselves very quickly when compared to the masking and de-masking time required. For edge masking try using a plastic profile paper binder - you know the type you slide paper into for a report ! It's cheap and cheerful. Regards

I'm interested in the masking boots and covers you mentioned. We have looked at them before, but we use an acrylic conformal coat and clean up with toluene. All of the boot type products we have looked at seem to breakdown in toluene. Do you reuse boots and covers? What are your experiences? Who are your 'boot' suppliers?

Looking forward to your responses.
