RoHS - Chromium | 8 May, 2009

Hi all,

Presently, we have loan a thermometer probe from supplier which used to check Soldering pot temperature.

But we found that the probe consisted of High CR6+ (Chromium) with reading about 187000ppm. As I know stanless steel consisted this chemical material.

We are in the doubt to used this probe on Lead free soldering pot due to corrusion or other effect may be caused on our LF solder content.

Can I know is Chromium restricted from RoHS? Is this chemical will effect the content of Lead free solder?

Hope you guys can help me on this problem. Thank you :)

Best Regards, Tang LK

Q1: Can I know is Chromium restricted from RoHS? A1: RoHS Restricted Substances (Pb, Hg, Cr6+, PBB, PBDE, Cd)

Q2: Is this chemical will effect the content of Lead free solder? A2: It's possible that the metals that comprise the stainless steel probe on your thermometer could leach into the solder in your wave solder pot. This risk could be counter balanced by: * Many wave solder pots are composed of stainless steel. So, maybe this potential for leaching is not an issue. * Relatively casual use of your thermometer probably won't have a significant effect even if metals leach from the probe.
