Use your own parts numbering system or adopt one. When you get into MRP systems etc... then this will come in handy.

Hi,

if you do only contract services I`d advice own part numbering. All I can say is just try to create each cathegories which will contain other cathegories and so on. Applying this system will make some order in your stock. For instance :

RETR0207XXXX

RE - resistor
T - THT
0207 - package
XXXX - number

RES1206XXXX

RE - resistor
S - SMD
1206 - package
XXXX - number

You can extend these numbers as much as you can and as much as you want parameters included in one number. We use around 14 signs - rest is included in part number description in our MRP system.

Of course there are more factors to conider if you want to use your own part numbering system - for instance you have your own stock, or you build products from customer material, etc.

If you do not use your own material so there is a risk you can use (accidentally or not :) for current production other`s customer components. In case you do not do logistics staff for you customer better separate components from customers.

Regards,
Andrzej

I would have to agree with using your own part numbering scheme.

Suppose you have a couple of customers who use the same size/material M3 X 6MM screw...
However, one of your customers does not approve of a vendor that your other customer does.
By creating your own part numbers, you will be able to help and control AVL issues accross the board for all customers, and if you have a lot of different box build assemblies or the potential for a bunch of box build assemblies (from different customers) this will keep from contaminating assemblies with unapproved/unacceptable material along with not have a bunch of different part # formats in inventory and on your shop floor.

Of course, I say this if you are building turnkey and not labor only...

All the Best!

We are a small contract manufacture who started out using the component manufactures part numbers. That lasted about one month then we had an apple and orange with the same part number.

I looked at what my customers were using, one had a real good system so I ask them if I could use there numbering system. They said sure, but my production manager pointed out that we then could have two parts with the same numbers, ours and the customers. We changed the family number series and put a letter in front of the part number.

We wound up with a part number system that has served us well for about 20 years.

The system uses 9 digits setup as follows:

XXXX-OOOO where XXXX is a family and OOOO is the part within the family.

We can also put our customers part numbers in the notes section of our accounting system. That way we can search for our number or the customers number.

Go with your own numbering system!
