We are adding water soluble flux in our manufacturing. I need to add an ultrasonic cleaner to clean the pcb assemblies. I am looking for a table top unit that can handle boards up to 10.5" x 17". We run high mix/low-medium volume.

Any suggestions/advice/recommendations as to which make and model unit would work well for this application would be appreciated. Thanks.

Try Crest-ultasonics.com Their sales people can help you with the right model number for your application. We have a couple of smaller units with years of service. Ask and see if circuit boards are an appropriate application. Ultrasonic cleaning is a little violent. When cleaning Cp6 nozzles that have pressed in cross pins, the violence of the imploding bubbles will cause the cross pins to "walk" out of the holes.

We have used good industrial dish washers in the past. We washed very dense SMT boards with mulitiple BGA's. they always passed Ionic tests. You can buy these for as little as $500. The less expensive ones won't hold up to 140F water and suponifier but at that price you can throw them away when the pumps die.

In the late 80s or early 90s, National Physical Laboratory (NPL) in the UK researched the frequencies and power levels that could be used for ultrasonic cleaning of electronic boards. The resulting reports by Dr. Colin Lea or maybe Peter Foote were aimed at convincing stubborn military types that ultrasonic cleaning could be used to clean boards safely. Dr Chris Hunt or Alan Brewin may be able to direct you to the reports.
