what sort of magnification is fair to use when evaluating a stencil cleaner i.e. apertures.

I would use the IPC 610 Mag guidelines: >1.0mm (0.039") 1.75X >0.5 to 1.0mm (0.02 to 0.039") 4X 0.25 to 0.5mm (0.00984 to 0.02") 10X <0.25mm (0.00984") 20X

I recommend checking the IPC Stencil and Misprinted Board Cleaning Handbook (IPC-7526). A PDF copy is available at: http://www.SmartSonic.com click on "Cleaning Products" then click on "Recommended Reading". I agree with Doug, the more powerful the better. A good stencil cleaner will not leave any visible residue.
