I keep getting mentor files from my customers, they are supplied for us to extract the placement files from (ref des, x, y, theta) to date we struggle getting the data out of this file, does anyone know of a software that will strip the placement files from a mentor output file (neutral file).

Thanks

cman,

Which placement machines do you use? What software do you use to program them?

There are several solutions out there such as CAM CAD, Valor, CircuitCAM, whatever Unicam is called these days... I can't keep up with the acquisitions.

None of those are free. I'm not aware of any free tools to do what you are asking. It has been a few years since I looked at a Mentor file but I'm looking at one right now.

If I remember correctly you get the X, Y, Theta from the ############################################# ###Component Information ############################################# section, in a line like this: COMP U29 '21154-AB So this is U29 at X=15.241, Y=2.219, top side?, Theta=0

If all you need is something to pull that data from the COMP line, I can probably give you something that will work, and I won't ask to be reimbursed for it.

cman,

I wrote a macro for "TextPad" which is free to download for a fully functional evaluation (which never expires). The macro converted my sample Mentor neutral file to this format:

############################################# ###Component Information ############################################# C10 11.666 12.669 Top 180 C101 4.891 2.894 Bot 180 C102 5.091 3.494 Bot 0 C103 5.341 2.894 Bot 180 C104 1.141 2.894 Bot 180 U83 10.666 12.094 Top 180 U84 11.566 4.544 Top 180 U85 12.466 8.444 Top 180 U86 10.666 3.644 Top 180 U87 11.566 9.344 Top 180 U88 10.666 10.244 Top 180 U89 11.566 11.144 Top 180 U90 10.666 5.444 Top 180 U91 11.566 6.344 Top 180 U92 12.466 7.244 Top 180 U95 0.8535 1.044 Top 270 U96 9.241 5.369 Top 180 U97 3.9035 0.444 Top 90 U98 0.3785 13.544 Top 90 U99 0.3785 11.544 Top 90 V1 17.266 1.369 Top 180

This has been truncated for display here because my sample file has 2861 placements. All other data in the file was removed.

Let me know if this is something you could use. Other approaches I could take are writing a script in Perl or a Java application.

Contact Mentor and ask them - explain your situation and tell them you only want to extract centroid data and that you couldn't design a doorbell. They may help you for free. Also, send me a file and I'll see what I've got.
